Anyone know how to convert WMP files to MP3's? I can't seem to find a program that will do that for me.

Let mek now if anyone has stumbled across this.

Ok so this is the problem that I'm running into. I had a napster account where I paid .99 per song that I downloaded. I basically uninstalled Napster and then reformatted a few days ago. Now when I try playing a few of the songs that I downloaded it's trying to download a License. The License will basically never download/errors out and it won't allow me to play the song. Do I need to installed Napster again? I really don't want Napster on my PC but I guess if that's what I have to do that's what I'll do. Is there anyway around this? I thought maybe by trying to convert the songs that maybe it would bypass that part of the license download.

Also does this mean since it's trying to download the license that my usage has expired on the song? I thought that since I purchased each song for .99 that technically it was mine?.?.?

Let me know if anyone else has any experience with this.

Did you try the two programs I linked too?

Goldwave is another program, although its much more then just a format conversion program.

Also, im not a programmer, so I don't know the specifics, but there might be a "header" in the WMP file that can be removed.... that might solve it, although i have no idea.

Yes I did. Sorry I didn't post that in my last response. None of the programs linked will work. I'm at a loss and kind of frusted, not that .99 is a lot of money but I have about $5.00 worth (not that 5.00 is a lot of money either) but I would like to listen to the music I paid for.
 
I've not used Napster's DL service before, so I'm not positive on how it works, but you need to somehow reacquire the keys for your music. If it will not DL automatically, you may have to reinstall Napster and re-download those songs. It's possible that the license it is looking for was tied to your specific install, so when you reinstalled, it thought you were on a different computer, and so wouldn't play/acquire license. Once you do get the songs playing again, the easiest way I know of to truly un-DRM them is to burn them to an audio CD from within WMP, and then re-rip the tracks to mp3 or whatever your format of choice is.

Pardon me while I hide from those that think this is the stupidest way possible to un-DRM/un-proprietarize music.

I guess we don't all have supersonic ears, perhaps he should try it for himself. "Pretty crappy" can be very subjective.

To the original poster, if you can't do a straight WMA -> MP3 you can always to a WMA -> WAV then WAV -> MP3. You will lose all tags though (including DRM), but may not be an issue for a small batch.

It wouldn't surprise me (haven't used it meself), but he was trying to avoid having to reinstall Napster to redownload the music. It sounded like he wants to crack or unwrap the encryption on the WMA files somehow, but I don't think it's feasible (aside from the murky legality of it).

How about you try something new here?
Instead of explaining something to me that I had already read it might be a better idea to focus on why asked the question to begin with. ;)
The OP clearly stated that none of the software that has been recommended in this thread works so I am inclined to believe that the the easiest "solution" is to reinstall Napster and re-acquire the licenses for those files (by using the Copy Library function) and then go from there.
That keeps us from ever getting into a discussion about a way to circumvent the copy protection scheme Napster uses.
(which makes me happy because I don't have to deal with someone bitching at me after I close their thread)

WavePad is also good and very simple.


Just open the file, it decodes it from wma directx automatically.


THen just save as .mp3.


Tis what I use.
