I want to both change LEDs and add LEDs on my fans. I already ordered 100 5mm white LED with a forward voltage of 3-3.6v and 20-25 mA. These LEDs came with 100 91 ohm resistor and 100 430 ohm resistors.For the fans that already have LED is it possible to just switch out the LED and not have to put in a resistor. Also for a fan that has no LEDs to start with is it ok if I put 3 LEDs in series with a 91 ohm resistor after the third LED and also have one led in parallel with a 430ohm resistor. After researching I saw that 4 LEDs in parallel each with a 430 ohm resistor seemed to work well. Just wondering which method I should use? Also do the 3 pin fan headers output 12v?

Parallel connection for all of them is easier solution.
And yes fan slot has 12V out.
 
So use 4 LEDs in parallel and give each one a 430ohm resistor after each LED. Thanks for the quick response.
 
Cool and is it ok to just replace the LEDs on a fan that already has LEDs on it without putting in a resistor.
 
It should work, yes, probably resistor is inside that FAN on its board, so there is no neeed to put additional resistor there.
 
Thanks for all the help, I have begun to solder the LED to the resistor, but wanted to make sure that it doesn't matter if I solder the resistor to the anode or cathode end or does it have to on the anode end of the resistor.
 
i swapped out the LEDs on an Antec fan and that worked fin with no resistors. Or you could just be dodgy and put 4x LEDs in series, they will be a littel bit dimmer but much easier to wire up (i have done it with a few projects in the past and it was fine.)

PS. you can put the resistor on either end.
 
nice, the resistors came with the LEDs so I figured I might as well put them in. Thanks a lot for the help.
