WinXP SP2 DEP issue

I am working on an A64 3200+ pc with a MSI K8Neo Platinum MB. I installed SP2, and now for some wonderful reason, DEP is closing out Windows Explorer! Of all programs, why did it have to go after that one... man. Anyone have any ideas why my PC might be setting off DEP? The only thing I could find is this article, but I do not use this driver as far as I am aware of: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;878474

Suggestions? Anyone with Similar Experiences?

maybe you hava a virus that has infected explorer.exe
I will try a more thorough virus scan, but I have McAfee VS Ent. 7.x with the latest super dat, and it hasn't picked up any activity. I doubt it is a virus, but I definately agree that a virus could be a possibility.

Any other Ideas?

apparently it can be turned off, havent run into this prob yet.
mcafee aint gonna find what you should be looking for.
try webroot spysweep 3.0
and new adaware 1.02 prof, use deep scan
(both free)

DEP is supposed to stop something wrong, so it might actually be working - LOL
Exporer.exe is often a target

Edit: scroll down how to turn off protection for legacy: (AFTER you make sure no hijack)

Thank you for the response and the articles. This will really give me a chance to tryout Lavasoft's new adware client. To be honest, I hope it is just a hijacker, because I really want to do everything possible to avoid formating and reloading everything. I have never heard of something hijacking the explorer.exe before (only iexporer.exe). It was working perfectly fine when I browsed the directory to select SP2 to install, then after the install/reboot... voila! Explorer keeps shutting down. Have you ever encountered a Hijacker that tags onto explorer.exe before? How common is that?

This PC actually belongs to my best friend, so anything is possible, he is a microbiology grad student, and not a network analyst. Thanks!

explorer.exe and iexplore.exe exploits are common
the latest removes your folder icons, leaves only plus signs
default theme refresh doesnt fix
slows computer to crawl
CPU to 99%

However, you can remove the DEP protection from ea app apparently (currently I have Intel, so not affected, but am about to buy 939)

since your computer went crazy after sp2 its prob the protection. look in services to see if there to disable. May be disable from BIOS - NX bit. link also shows how to disable on legacy apps which I assume includes explorer.

BTW SP2 can be rolled back to SP1 (if it was there), in add remove You can make programs show up in "Software Add/Remove" for programs that are hidden.

Find the following Windows/inf/sysoc.inf (display hidden files in the folder)

Open sysoc.inf with Notepad and look for the lines containing 'hide', remove the word 'hide' for programs you want to be displayed.

leave 2 adjacent commas

ex. msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

Save the modified sysoc.inf, that's it !

================

You can also boot into safe mode and try last known good config
