I have a pc running Windows XP and everytime I boot it up I get a popup from the installation wizard and it says:

This wizard helps you install software for: Unknown.

How/where do I look to try and track down what this is and get rid of it?

In device manager I have Other Devices - Unknown device (not much help there)

Sounds like Windows thinks a driver is missing for one of your hardwares. Have you purchased any new peripherals recently? Are all of your regular devices/components working normally? Try disabling the unknown device, see what happens...

Nope, no new hardware.

Then chances are one of your other drivers is either corrupt or didn't install properly. Also, out of curiosity, why are you still on Windows XP?

Go into properties for your unknown device and under the Details tab change the drop down to Hardware Ids. Take the #'s after VEN_ and DEV_ and go to pcidatabase.com, see if they have a listing for it.

I see him answering, and regardless of that answer, being flamed for running XP. I hope he doesn't answer just to drive you mad.

LOL! Well, actually this is not my pc, but someone elses. I just went in and disabled the unkinown and so far that took care of it.

Thanks everyone!

Actually, no. Some people have legit reasons for running XP. For example, a lot of businesses, enterprises, and government offices are still running XP due to beaurucracy, budget constraints, compatibility, or just because they're used to it. My workplace actually still runs on XP since its the only OS so far compatible with our in house software.

Others however are still using XP just because they've been using it, and heard bad things about Vista, and thus haven't bothered to consider Windows 7. For those, it might be advantageous to upgrade for the new features and performance improvements.

Either way, there was no intention of flaming, and I don't see anything in my previous posts to suggest such. please consider before you speak.

Just un-install it from the properties tab.....

there are more involved ways to get rid of it, if you know how :)
