Windows XP keeps crashing applications, error inside

I recently did a fresh install of Windows XP (+Service Pack 2) and since then many programs (i.e. games) have been crashing repeatedly. All of them with the exact same error and the same characterics as well (the program aborts, the error appears, and a black square takes up 75% of the screen).

What could this be?

What video card do you have? Did you install the latest driver for it? It may be an issue with the video card's driver (since your getting a black square).

It could also be a heat issue. Have you overclocked your CPU or video card?

Also, have you tried uninstalling SP2, to see if SP2 itself, is the problem?

Try removing SP2. That might help things a bit.
