Windows Vista Activation

Have a question about windows activation. A relative of mine has an HP computer that's saying their key is invalid. They called HP and apparently they want $60 bucks to fix this. The machine came with Vista and I think it's really stupid to have to pay more for windows they already own. Is there any way around this? (this is not software piracy BTW)

I found something about re-entering the product key on HP's site. Not sure if this would work or not.

Does it have the key on the side of the computer? If so, you can enter that key, and if it fails to activate, use the phone method to activate it directly from Microsoft. Did they buy this straight from HP or a legit retailer, or some mom and pop shop?

I assume it does have the key on the machine. Also, they said they called MS and they had to resolve it with HP. I don't know where they bought it.

Sounds fishy, did they buy it from some ghetto shop?

I've had windows refuse to activate before, but the phone support was always pretty quick and helpful.
