Weird problem my friend is facing. he lives a few states away.

when he boots the computer with his ethernet cable in, the system stalls in windows.(xp home)

his icons are all there... numlock is active....he can press the start button (but nothing will open if he tries to)... can not open IE.

The system stays like that for upwards of 30min before it catches up (he is not clicking everything like mad either)

I have him unplug the ethernet cable (which is connected straight into a cable modem) and reboot...and the system boots right up.

I had him update and run AVG... no virus.
Had him run trijan remover... no trojan
Ran stinger... nada
Checked for ad-spyware....nothing
Disabled all the crap in startup in msconfig... nothing..
checked all the processes running in the background... all seemed legit.

I'm kinda confused on what this could be.

have him his escape a couple of times next time he restarts and see if that speeds him up. It kind of sounds like he is mapped to something that is no longer on the network.

I'd rip out/uninstall the NIC and see what happens. Throw in a different one for shits and giggles as well.

Oh, just thought of something...

He has had this computer 3 years and this has just started happening.

ALso, the nic does work when you plug the cable back in after restart...

I'll try the escape deal... and i;ll see if he can remove the nic and replace it. He is not to computer literate... so will see how that goes.

thanks for the input. if anyone else has anything to add. feel free.

Danny
