Does anyone know of a good free or affordable audio program that compresses audio so it makes loud noises quieter and quite noises louder?

Windows loudness equalizer is crap and a couple programs over the years i have had with carious free programs didn't do enough or lacked control.

I really hate movies and TV shows because the range of audio is so huge. having volume loud enough to hear the quite parts like quite voices turns loud noises in ear bleeding loud and so laud it'll wake/annoy other people too.

I really want a good program that does this because its super annoying to go back and turn volume up and down on parts because i could hear them and what not.

any help on finding a good program to do this is much appreciated.

For 5.1 encodes you can do that with LAV filters with a player that supports them.

Not tried it, but this popped up when I did a search for "Software Equalizer"

http://sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/

well thats a cool equalizer but i dont see a compressor in it. I'll google some more but surprised no one on here has used one....am i the only one that loathes not being able to hear voices and hates sound that shatters my ear drums?

this might have some potential if combined with something

theres this but i think it isn't active so i cant use this for streams

http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/

There is this that works but it is 30 bucks....wondering if its worth the dive? I might try it next weekend

If you don't find a working software solution, Xonar sound cards have that feature.

If it has to apply to all sounds, sound card is pretty much your only hope in fact. It has to be done on driver level, a separate software can't hook to game audio. At least very easy that is. A compressor might be actually a nice cheat to first player games, would enable you to hear footsteps/movement much further.

the software here works but it isn't as customization as i would like but helps a lot. It runs as a software sound card so it adds some latency so you got to fiddle around and see what buffer you can tolerate or stand. medium works for me and small i get some clicks and pops when i fittle with programs but it works for consistent play back but i usually do other things while i watch TV so i am sticking with medium buffer.
