ok, I have vista basic 64bit running 24/7(folding), and I was wondering if you could run, say Xp 64bit , in Vmware?

Good luck installing VMware in Vista 64, the signed driver thingy is starting to get on my nerves. I have found lots on the net about disabling this feature but its not going to well.
Let us know how you make out.

Actually, I was thinking Xp with Xp for a second quad boxen...
Could you provide a bit more information? What's your overall objective, is it for F@H or another application?
I tried for about 3 minutes to get VMware to work in 2k8 Beta something or another- didn't want to deal with the signed driver crap myself and promptly gave up (installed 2k3...)
I think the general gist is running the VM's limits the folding client to only pull work units which are assigned to the dual core boxes and not the quad core boxes. Dual core WU's score better than quad core WU's. Do take a quad, somehow limit the folding client to only get dual core WU's (read: VM's) and your off and running.
While I assume if you take a quad running on windows, and run 2x VM's, you may score better than the quad naively due to scoring on dual vs. quad WU's. Current VMware Server limits the VM to only access 2x cores.
Most people are running windows as a host because they know it/need it and folding in VM nix OS's cuz it's free and scores more.
Don't forget a machine in VM land still needs a valid licenses...

I have had problems with setting up vm ware with linux and getting it to work well. I think since xp is easier for me to configure, and I can get it to work reasonably well, that would work better for me.
I have tried on three time to set up Vmware and each time it has been frustrating for one reason or another. my quad is putting out ~2500ppd, and Id like it to be nearer to 3500 without linux. It is now running at 10m07sec/frame on a 2653.
What I have:
Q6600
Xp pro X64 as host system/Vmware with Xp home for the second 0s
2gb-4gb ram
I plan to build another boxen and unsure what to do, I want 6800-7500ppd from the two boxen. I have the X3210 that gives ~750ppd with the standard clients and Xp home. I want to hit 8k and be able to hold it with these three computers.

All of my machines have valid licences. I really don't care about that part- I really only need 1 computer at my house, and a pentium D 920 would fit the bill. Hell, i'm shopping for my Third Quad

The only reason I can see for running Windoze inside Windoze in a VM and folding on it, is if you have a realy iffy internet/intranet connection.
Once the client is running inside the VM, its independent of the external network connection, so it doesn't hang when the connection goes down.
But linux will still give you more points on average.
If you don't know any Linux you can always just follow my guide.
