Windows display selection help

So I've got a new Alienware laptop that replaced my decent desktop. I move a lot so I had to bite the bullet and fork out the cash for the laptop.

Anyways, the laptop is hooked up to a 24'' panel via the 780m.

My problem is that when Windows boots and I log in Windows properly chooses the 24'' panel as my only display. However, the backlight on the 17'' laptop display stays on unless I manually force Windows to quick switch between both displays after I log in. I like to keep the laptop display off as when on it's drawing power obviously and with a 230w power brick I need all the juice I can spare to throw at the GPU.

My guess is that this may be more of a firmware issue rather then a config issue but if anyone has experienced this before and knows how to fix it I'd appreciate the help.
