I spent a couple weeks on here getting educated on what to get if I'm building a new rig. I went with the E6400 , P5W DH, 8800GTS, 2x1GB G. Skill DDR 800 5-5-5-15, and a Corsair 620. Still waiting on the board, but I have everything else.

But one thing that didn't cross my mind was the OS.

I don't know linux or anything like that, and am gonna go with XP Pro. Should I get the 64 bit version? is it even compatible? do i stand to gain anything with it? or just go with regular XP pro?

Unless you need (and have) 4GB or more of RAM, then x64 builds of Windows won't do much for you. It should work, driver and software issues aside, but it'll be more work to get it going for little to no benefit right now.

While the current crop of 64-bit processors have advantages beyond their increased native address space, the "big" thing with 64-bit is being able to address large amounts of physical memory.

You could use XP x64, it's pretty compatible with regular XP...
I've successfully run Doom3, Half-Life 2, Far Cry and NFS Carbon on it, so far (I have an E6600 with GeForce 7600GT and Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard (i965 chipset)).
So I guess most recent and future games will work on x64. Might be a few exceptions... would be a shame if your favourite game just happens to be one of those exceptions.

XP x64 is slightly faster than regular XP... but we're talking about 5% or less... so nothing to lose sleep over.

Far Cry is the only game I know of that actually offers special content for 64-bit... You can download an update with a 64-bit version of the game engine, and levels that are larger and more detailed.

So well... For gaming x64 does have something going for it, but not that much...
I still keep a copy of the regular XP Pro on my HDD, just in case.
Then again, I mainly use my PC for developing software and recording my own music (Cubase), and x64 is just better at that sort of stuff.
