Window Cutting - use plexi or lexan?

Okay here's the deal....I bought a cheap Xdreamer case off of newegg...and I modded it, and put fans all over it....(you can see the mods at http://images.pyrospheric.net/ ) but in the process of cutting the fan holes for my 2 92mm fans in the window, I cracked it pretty good. The problem is that I don't know if the window is plexiglass or lexan or what. I wonder what is easier to cut? also, I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a better way to cut out fan holes and thier associated screw holes. I really want to finish this case up and have it looking good, but I need to get a nice window first! if anyone has a tip or a link or advice, please let me know! Thanks in advance!
 
i put a top window on my case and use plexi and it was actually really easy despite a few problems with the shape of the case. to cut it i just use a knife to make where i wanted to cut and then put it on the edge of the table and it snapped right down the line but make sure pressure is even across it.
 
I went with Lexan myself. I picked it up at Home Depot. Just score and snap to teh desired length. :)
 
what about cutting out fan holes, or drilling fan mounting holes? any experiences with that?


I never thought of doing the cut/bend method, I will have to use that when I get my new window .... probably going to go with plexiglass
 
When I had to redo all the windows in my case I used Lexen for the top cause well, it's useful to be able to sit things on it. But do to price I used Plexi for the main window.

When it comes down to it. If you can afford Lexen use it. If not use Plexi
 
I'd say lexan is easy to work with/machine, but plexi is more suited for a computer window. It's (IMO) less prone to scratches and slightly more brittle, but who's going to be throwing stuff at their case?

The problem with cutting plexi/lexan is that round/curves are fairly difficult to do. If you use a dremel or other related tools then you risk chipping/cracking/melting. It's best to go slow with a good bit of lubricant of some sort. I'm sure someone else'll chime in, but i always get my stuff CNC machined :D
 
Go plexi, it's cheaper and for a computer window it's more than strong enough.

Face it if your comp gets hit hard enough to break/penetrate plexi it's getting thrown across the room by the force anyway.

If you need to cut any non-straight edges see if you can lay hands on a jigsaw with a wood cutting blade, it will even work to cut the fan holes if you have some patience and a file.
 
I need to put a window in mine, but i've got the antec sonata with the handle on the side. I'd like to make the window curve to match the handle, which do you think would be easier to do that with? (lexan or plexi)

Either/Or. All you have to do is cut it so the window material doesn't get in the way of the handle... Not diffficult to do by any means... A dremel + sandpaper will get you there either way.
