I was considering my low budget the other day, so I decided the best thing for me to do would be to get a cheap computer and overclock some things. I won't list full system specs, but here's the important stuff(pertaining to the subject).

Pentium 4 2.4 A

This cpu seems to be giving great results across the board, so why not?

ASUS P4?800D-E motherboard

this one has an SiS 655TX, dual ddr, all the good stuff. anybody have some experience with this chipset? the motherboard has a great feature set........

thermalright all copper heatsink

don't know the exact model number, but it's the only one they had in stock at newegg for the p4 478. i've heard they're a good brand.

vantec tornado 92mm fan

goes on top of the heatsink

thermaltake purepower 420w silten power supply

this one doesn't seem bad, and it's good priced

any suggestions/changes? please don't give me the SiS sucks shit.

for all those to lazy to read the above, here's a short list:

as for cases, I was thinking about the chieftec matrix case, which they should have at http://www.tigerdirect.com

also, I'd have round ide cables and a sata drive, plus at least 2 case fans for good airflow

*EDIT* shit, i forgot the ram. Mushkin pc3200 level 1. should i get this or is the 2-2-2 special better, or even another brand?
 
I think you mean a 2.4E because those are the Prescotts. And those blow. Get a 2.4C and the RAM is fine. Those are my only suggestions.
 
umm... he does mean the 2.4A - there is no 2.4E. the 2.4A refers to both a prescott w/o HT (533fsb) and a 400fsb regular p4.

i'd try to get a motherboard based on the 865/875 chipset, as those overclock/perform better. actually, since you're looking at the 533fsb prescott, you could get pt880 based board, but you'd run into a wall at around 220fsb or so probably. the ati chipset is another option (the rs350, you'd want the pro variant, but newegg doesn't have it AFAIK) because it seems optomized to run with a prescott. of course, the most stable/best overclocking route would still be the intel chipsets. the SiS chipsets don't generally overclock very well from what i've seen. but, since it is an 800fsb chipset and you're getting a 533 fsb chip, it will probably hit the same wall as the ati and pt880 chipsets, but overall performance will most likely be best with the ati chipset. you get decent integrated graphics too.
some boards to consider (you can find these at newegg):
MSI PT880 Neo-LSR
Jetway A350DMS <-- apparent bios limit of 148, may be fixed with bios update, but you should check on that
And also any of the abit/asus/msi/dfi 865PE boards will be fine, just make sure that they support prescott (check the manufacturer website, don't go on what newegg says - they aren't always up-to-date or accurate at all.

however, if you want to use the SiS based motherboard, go for it. it should be fine.


thermalright makes good heatsinks. only get the tornado if you know you can handle the noise (quite a lot, actually, believe it or not;)) if you aren't sure about noise, wait for newegg to stock the xp-120 heatsink, and then get a moderate noise level 120mm fan such as the panaflo m1a.

the chieftec matrix case is basically the same as the antec/chenming/certain other brands, so unless it has some features you want that the others don't have, consider buying one of the similar cases from newegg so you can save a little on shipping.

the 2.4A should overclock fine. it can generally hit about 3.6 or so on good air cooling, which you are getting.

for memory - i might get the corsair pc3200XL stuff. it can hit some nice high fsbs and can run really tight timings at the speeds you're likely to use it at.

thanks for the tips. actually, I decided to get a zalman hsf, allcopper. I don't remember what it's called and i can't paste the link or anything do to browser "limitations" but it's about 35 on newegg and i've heard good stuff about it, it seems to be popular around here.
 
the zalman one is good. i've got it on an athlon and it does the job and quietly.
 
anybody have suggestions on a good overclocking video card? i might need to save some cash.....
 
oh yeah... i missed the thermaltake power supply you put on the list. don't get it. really. thermaltake isn't much good. i'd go with a fortron/sparkle (same thing) at the very least, or an antec true power psu if you can afford it (not as much of a difference now tho. heh, i can get a true430 for the same amount i paid for my 400W powmax POS ~6 months ago at a B&M store)

video card - you might want to consider getting the good (powercolor) 9800SE that can be softmodded into a 9800Pro, it only costs ~150. the success rate is over 50% at least i think and it is a bit better than a 9600XT in any case. and it overclocks pretty well too (about as well as any 9800) as long as you get a better cooler on it.
