I currently have a socket A system. Will I notice a huge difference in going with a Conroe E6300 and a DS3 motherboard?? I am about to buy that combo. I would like feedback from previous socket A owners.

I went from Socket 479 Intel Northwood 3.2Ghz P4 to a Dual Core Opteron 165 and noticed a huge difference. So going from Socket A Amd to Conroe you will notice a very very impressive increase in performance!

I just ordered the following stuff from Newegg...

E6300
Gigabyte DS3 motherboard
2GB Patriot 667 DDR2 Memory
Antec Sonota Case w/ 450Watt power supply
NEC DVD Burner
Gigabyte 1600XT Video card with a heat pipe instead of fan

What kind of overclocks can I expect from this setup??? I am confused as to how to overclock the conroe processors. What should I do?

idle i am getting 35-36c. completely loaded (orthos on both cores and 3dmk05 simultaneously) around 57c. but i need to add a lot of voltage to go from 3600 to 3700. it is 4hours + orthos stable but i run at 400x9 99% of the time and thats around 33-34c idle and 51-52c loaded. this is with an xp90 with a medium 92mm panaflo with an open case. ambient down here is around 26C right now.

back on topic. you have what is pretty much the default setup for 6300/6400 overclocking. check the conroe oc database. guys are getting 3600, but it looks like its pretty easy to get 3150 and up with very little vcore, like 1.4v and under. there should be overclocking guides here and at xs. set your ram at 1/1 or less and default spd timings and vdimm, then start bumping up your fsb 5 or so mhz at a time and use whatever it is that you use to check stability. when it starts to become unstable, ie hanging, spontaneously reboots, then add a bit more vcore and keep on trucking. i am unfamiliar with that board and bios, but its a popular setup and you ought to be able to get decent help. good luck.

Coming from a Socket A? Hell yeah you will notice a difference.

I upgraded from an Athlon XP 3500+ to an E6400 OC'd now to 2.88Ghz and the difference, even at stock speeds was astounding.

Here you go:

1- sleep alot before your package comes because you will not sleep when it does
2- Get into BIOS and then hit CONTROL and F1 keys
3- Go to M. I. T menu
3- Enable Host Frequency and change your FSB (or host Frequency) to 333
3- change your PCI E to 100
4- Change Memory Multiplier to 2
5- Set DRAM Timing to mannual and change CAS-tRCD-tPR-tRAS to your memory spec (such as 4-4-4-14)
7 - EXIT BIOS and save.
9 - BAM, YOU GOT 2.3GHZ
10 - increase vCORE voltage if needed. and keep increasing FSB until you reach the max

Enable Host Frequency and change your FSB (or host Frequency) to 333

at the very least, this is an easy goal to achieve. I'm a tad over that now but not because I've reached the limit of my cpu, it's just too warm in the case and I'm too lazy to mess with ventilation at the moment :)

I'll try these ideas when I get my conroe package on wednesday or thursday.
