I have a i7-2600/2700 (sandy bridge). I dont member the exact processor but its something like that. If was was upgrade my 460GTX to a 670GTX or the AMD/ATI equivalent would my processor be a bottleneck? I haven't o/ced the CPU.
 
Are you using solid state drive or standard hard drive?.. To be honest the only way you could get a bottle neck with that processor is using standard mechanical hard drive... Actually the main bottleneck issue comes with the HDD if you using SSD do not worry u have still processor for years even using triple or quad sli u won't bottleneck it.. Regards..
 
i'm using a SSD only to load the OS and apps. All my videos, photos, and games are still stored on a mechanical drive (western digital black if that makes any difference)

Ignore this post. SSD's do not improve the frames per second you get in games. SSD's are faster than mechanical drives but all they do gaming wise is lower loading times and that's it. The OS will feel smoother and more responsive but again this has no effect on gaming and has nothing to do with your CPU.

Agreed, you should have no issues. I have an i7-930 and a GTX 680 and the GPU maxes out before the CPU does.

In almost every case this is true, but I feel the need to mention that a SSD does improve performance in games that heavily stream levels. Specifically, I got a very noticable performance boost simply by dragging and dropping Stalker:SoC from a 7200RPM drive to a SSD. For normal games that load level by level, though, the difference is of course so negligible as to be nonexistant.
 
Yeah that CPU is fine ..... if it were ever to bottleneck your system it OC's very easily anyhow.

Yes definitely!, if you lower your gaming resolution to say 800x600 the CPU could definitely bottleneck the GPU in some games.

ended up w/ a 680. time to game in 2560x1600 res! I hope.

Just read this thread since you updated it, ^this may be up there with some of the dumbest shit and worst advice I have ever read on H forums. WOW.
 
going from 1900 up to 2560 res is such a improvement on a 30". bf3 is beautiful at 1900 w/ medium detail, but at 2560 in ultra, its just unreal.
 
Im running a 7950 with a Q6700, it bottlenecks at about 80% GPU usage, but most games still play at 1080 60fps.

I dont understand why people with i5/i7 proccesors always think they will have a bottleneck?
 
I haven't kept up w/ computers, and my processor isn't that new so I assumed the newer video cards were already ahead of the processor.

i have a buddy that made the switch to SSD many yrs ago and swore by it. I kept telling him I'd rather spend it on a new processor or gpu. I finally gave in. Now I know why he swore by it.

The HDD is the slowest component in any machine today. I wish SSDs were more affordable though :(
 
your cpu should not be a bottleneck for any gpu for at least another 2-3 years
