I have a system here that is my server right now - running Ubuntu Server headless with sabnzbd, apache/mysql/php, irssi screen session, etc and my wife needs a computer. Is there a way to run ESXi with one of the VMs dominant so I can run everything off of this one system? What I mean is that a Windows 7 VM would be the VM always displayed to the monitor and taking keyboard/mouse input.

Shutting down the physical system will be disabled so the Ubuntu VM is always up. The VM she would use would be Win7 and just be used for Office, web browsing, light photoshop work - no gaming.

What kind of hardware am I looking at adding? I've never used ESXi before, am I looking into the right setup? Trying to save some money here and get some VM experience.

ESXi is it's own OS. You would have to have another PC to either RDP to the Windows 7 guest or run the vSphere client and console to the the guest. Both require another PC so no you can't do this from the server running the ESXi Hypervisor.

If your hardware supports it you could install Win7 on the server and run VMWorkstation and run the Linux VM's you require.
 
I'm not interested in running the linux server under a VM in linux. I guess my search continues.

How about installing win7 for your wife and running virtualbox with the ubuntu server as a VM? I've done that and it works just fine.
 
For some reason the images won't load for me on [H] so I can't correct my last post - I don't really want to run linux as a VM under Windows. Worst case would be running Win7 under linux in a VM.

I guess it's not a big concern, building a mATX box is like $300-400 these days. :(
 
If you want this to be easy for your wife, ubuntu on win7 is the easiest way. What is your concern with that?
 
I would set her up a dedicated PC. If ever it locks up or something, her first reaction will probably be to reach down and hit the power button, bringing down your server and all.

When I lived with my parents they had their own PC, I had mine upstairs. My server was in the basement next to their PC and it was headless. Countless time did they hit the power switch on the wrong machine... pain in the ass lol. You can get a half decent PC for like 500 bucks now, no reason to try to find workarounds now days.
 
Hyper-V would do that for you, the base 2008 R2 install runs as a "vm" once you have it enabled so it boots into it on the local console. You could then run linux on Hyper-V instead of running it ontop of windows, but you'd also need to buy a server license.

I don't have any experience with Windows after XP so I would prefer the base to be something that I know inside and out.
