Will an upgrade version of Vista Home Premium work as a standalone install?

I have done installs of my copy of XP(the upgrade) from a fresh hard drive before.

Can I install an "upgrade" copy of Home Premium on a blank hard drive?

By default: no.

To be complying with the EULA you should have a copy of 2000, XP or Vista which you're not using (as the Vista upgrade is replacing that product).

Not so, according to the sticky. By detecting itself on the drive, it qualifies the upgrade, and will activate just fine.
