Will a Physics processor improve general performance?

Does it help overall and for software that doesn't support it or does it just sit there?
 
No, and not many games are going to support it in the future. This is because the quad core processors are more popular, and powerful enough to do the physics themselves. So any physics work in future games will be done by the processor, not the PPU.

They aren't populair as Quadcore is where the market is heading to it's not much like a choice. Instead populair its more it becoming mainstream in the future. So a solid target platform for Dev's.

this means that Dualcore will becoming the minimum base target load of Physics for games instead single core. As Dual core wil be lowbudged mainstream Game CPU.
Quadcore will be the mainstream midrange default Physics load target platform. The common max.
This is not that Quadcore sufice for Physics or even compete with PPU. Some Dev's just take What a Quadcore can hanle as max ceiling. As there aim is to reach a large target platform and don't push the hardware avaible on the market. This means a decent level of Phsyics is possible and reaching a large audience.
But PPU and GPU hardware dedicated for Physics go way beyond that Physics limmit CPU can offer. Games that aim also at the hardcore gamers and enthausiast that do push the hardware.

Like some boycot DX10.
While other do the extra mile the bridge to far and stand out in to the market of games.

That's whats Dx10 and other new impopulair tech offers. The need of a killergame.

CoJ DX10 version offer that for DX10.
Unreal3 might do that for PPU.
Or Game using that engine and push PhysX to the max.
Like also some HavokFX titles will do for GpGPU use.

It's more that Games will get more Phsyics either way it'more a question how much more.
A core or two more or whole lotta more.
And hopefully put to good use.
