Wikipedia’s founder said today that he has plans to build a search engine to rival Google and Yahoo.

Wikia Inc., the commercial counterpart to the non-profit Wikipedia, is aiming to take as much as 5 percent of the lucrative Internet search market, Jimmy Wales said at a news conference in Tokyo.

Would be nice if Wiki pulls it off. The funding would definitely help it survive. How many months does it have left? Two?

Im sure he mentioned this a few weeks ago in a TWIT.TV podcast, probably Net At Night.

They can do all this, but yet they were worried about funding?

Are you suggesting they curl up in a ball and wait for the cash to run out? The absolutely LAST thing you want to to when you're losing money is nothing at all.

Considering that wikipedias built in search engine is nearly useless, to me this is on the level of AMD saying they are coming out with something new and impressive. I hope they at the very least, plan to improve the built in search engine on wikipedia before making a whole new site to out-do google.

Google could just simply pull wiki search results and the website would be dead in a very short period of time .

as far as i'm concerned, the search engine market is covered well enough. They must have something under their sleeves to bring to the table, cause I'm not seeing room for improvement TBH. They know better than I do though...
