I was coping files from my 450 mhz machine over to my 1.5ghtz maching and when I was done using the 1.5ghtz machine I went to use the 450mhz computer and it had and error msg on it that had said something along the following C:\dos and setting\my name...etc this error may be caused by hard disk failure or a change in the registry. So i was like well what the hell. So I rebooted it and I got all these white vertical lines where it adds up the ram and then tells me my cmos battery is dead (its been like that 4 ever its a whole nother story) then it hits the next boot screen where it says update escd and that screen is fine. It proceeds to put that bar along the bottom to show u how close w2k is to loading and i can see the white vertical lines . Yet when i am in windows they do not appear but yesterday night the computer did lock up making me believe the hard drive is the culprit but the white lines make me think something else. anyone have any idea. I am gunna do a disk defrag and or scandisk and then c what happens worst case is i will re-write the files and go from there

I would put the hard drive from the 450 into the new computer temporarily and access the disk on the new computer for a while then you will know if it is the hard drive....as to what else it might be? could be anything from dust bunnies to overheating component but chances are if it tells you the battery is dead it would be. then it can't save your bios information and it resets to default every time you restart.
