I have been fighting a few issues with my HTPC randomly kicking me out of MCE. I went into the event log and found that I was getting a ATAPI error and a Disk error. I do not have the exact text of the errors with me but the ATAPI error was about the disk controller taking too long to respond. The disk error was error with my "D" drive.

I'm wondering if this is a bad drive or maybe the controller on my DS3 board is going?

When I left this morning I was copying all the recorded TV off of it onto another drive but in the 30 minutes it took for me to get ready for work it only copied 2 shows (6GB).

The wierd part about this is my "D" drive is a partition on my 250GB drive that I use for my main drive. I do not get any errors or issues when copying to or fom the OS partition.

Any suggestions? I am going to try and move the drive to another SATA port but I will have to take a drive off line to do that. Lucky for me the wife is in Maine for some training this week so I don't have to worry about her looking for the stuff on that drive.

Moved it to another port and it seems to be working fine now... yeah... my DS3 is going down...

Check your memory. I was getting wierd disk errors once and it turned out one of my Corsair (who else?) mem sticks was shot. I'm still waiting for the RMA (been two months)

I've seen similar problems in the past. I used to spend the extra on corsiar ram til I found out that I was only paying double for their warranty, which isn't any better that most 3rd tier companies. Now days I buy only g.skill ram whenever possible. Do some memtests(memtest.org) on your htpc, then look for "grc spinrite" @ http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm , and do a memtest86 on it.

If those fail then try each ram stick one at a time, repeating the memtest each time, All the way through each time.

It seems that file copies take a long time, what network connection are they on? 10mbs, 100mbs, 100 full duplex? Maybe your switch/firewall/router is dropping packets? I've had several older dlink's do this... Things to check into, as 6 gb takes only a few minutes to transfer across my network, limited only by my hard drive's throughput, not the network.

I did a memtest on the htpc and there were no errors. I have 2GB of patriot DDR2-800. The slowness is copying from that one partition on a SATA drive to another SATA drive in the system. Over the network (Gb) I can copy to the other drives fast without any issues also.

I have had no more errors pop up in the event log since I moved ports. I've pushed this hardware pretty hard, it was my main machine oc'd to 3ghz, running at near 100% load for 6+ months (re-encoding dvd's to h.264).
