I upgraded to a new larger sata hard drive. I was looking to use acronis true image home (10) to clone my older drive onto the newer one. For what it's worth, my system is a little old, a socket 754 based venice.
Anyways, installed the new drive, acronis had no problem formatting it, it worked in windows just fine, and I had no issues with the cloning process. Everything looked good, when the time came, acronis powered down the machine, (due to the need to remove the old hard drive of course) and I thought everything was going to be good. The drive I was upgrading from is a seagate 160g SATA, with 2 partitions, C: being 35G, and D: being the remainder. I set the partitions in Acronis for the new drive (a 7200.10 seagate 500g SATA drive) to be 30G for C: and the remainder being D:
The new hard drive became no longer usable. It was detected in bios just like it always was, but I would get nothing but disk error after disk error.
I double checked that the drive didn't have any jumper settings on it that were wrong, and I did notice the only jumpers on the drive were relating limiting it to sata 1.5g or 3g. My board does not support sata2, so I left the jumpers in the default configuration which was sata 1.5g of course. Perplexed, I tried again.
That drive never booted, and I could never boot into windows even off the original hard drive if the new hard drive was installed!
I even tried to just do a fresh install of XP onto the drive, the problem is that even in the XP recovery or installation console, the drive shows as "unknown disk" and it can not format or partition the drive to install onto.
I'm at a loss of what to do with it really. The only things I can think of are some wierd limitation with my older system, or perhaps the drive just happened to die right at the most unlikely of times. I'm not especially familiar with how acronis does drive cloning, but the process is pretty simple really, having done it a dozen times with other applications.
Any thoughts? Suggestions? The only thing I can think of is to pop the drive into a friends machine and see what happens. I've never really had a problem with a brand new hard drive before. It should be noted that when I disconnect the 500g drive, I can load into windows off the original 160g drive with no problem at all.
BTW, if it matters, some info about my system is:
ECS Nforce-3A mainboard (nforce 3 250 chipset)
2gigs of OCZ 2T ram
Athlon 64 3200+ Venice socket 754
XP Pro SP2
