Wide Screen Resolution

Hi All,
I've got a question for the video gurus about resolution. I've had a AIW Radeon 9700 Pro for a couple years now, and it's served me well. I'm not planning on getting rid of it until I can upgrade to an PCI-E system, so it's staying for now. In the mean time, I'm considering upgrading to a Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD to replace my huge CRT.

My concern is with the resolutions used by the Wide screen. The Dell uses 1680x1050 res. This resolution is not advertised on any of the Radeon series as far as I can tell. I know the 9700 Pro lists the following: 1600x1200, 1920x1080, 1920x1200,1920x1440,2048x1536. Now clearly some of these are well beyond 1680x1050. Is it safe to assume the card can also run at 1680x1050, or is there some fundamental difference that could cause the card not to work with this monitor? I've checked Dell's site, but they only show approved hardware for their own systems, not for 3rd party equipment.

Thanks.

It'll run at that resolution, but I'm not sure if the default ATI driver supports it. If not, use RivaTuner to set up a custom resolution, or get the OmegaDriver pack which already has that res modded in.

It should work. Your monitor is supposed to list the resolutions that it is capable of in an .inf config file which tells the card what resolutions can be used, so the new monitor should give you the option.

You might want to check out http://www.widescreengamingforum.com. They have a lot of info on widescreen stuff.

Good luck!
