Instead of running some complex system of wireless security, why not switch up to a paint that will keep your wireless signal inside your home or office.

“The use of EM-SEC Coating as an electromagnetic barrier for the containment of wireless networks has opened a new realm of possibilities for our company and for the future of wireless communications” said Robert Boyd, Vice President and Director of Technology for EM-SEC Technologies, LLC. “As hackers, identity thieves and even terrorists become more sophisticated in the methods they use to obtain information or inflict damage, this experiment confirmed EM-SEC Coating reduces the threat from electronic eavesdropping and blocks out electromagnetic interference for the protection of electronic data.”

Good. Lets use it in movie theaters to block the cell phone BS.

agreed! now if only we can find a way to stop people from talking through movies....maybe a big mallet?

LOL. The whole concept is ridiculous. Let's see, I'll paint my house to keep the hackers from getting into my wireless internet connection...rather than just using strong passwords and modern routers. This will be worth the loss of my cell phone use in my house, the inability of my normal cordless phone from working out in the yard, and potential loss of radio/tv signal strength inside my house.

I agree, it should be mandatory to use on theaters and schools, though.

I think the paint is kinda crazy but I'm against it in theaters and in schools if it kills cell phones as well.

The day the theaters around me block my cell phone is the day they loose any chance of ever getting a fucking penny from me. No I don't talk on the phone durning a movie either. One I get emails to my blackberry and need to be able to get them. Also I have had to take an important phone call durning a movie. I got up and left the theater. Simple as that. Would argue the same in schools as well. Don't see any good reason in blocking them.

You need to get emails during a movie? Why not just walk out of the theater afterwards and retrieve them? Getting up in a theater and walking down the aisle, disrupting people and blocking their view, isn't much better than answering your phone.

If email and all of that is so important, why are you going to a movie in the first place? Seems like you don't have that kind of time.

You know your right. Getting up and walking down the aisle is disrupting people. We shouldn't allow people to bring drinks in either as it may make them have to go to the bathroom. The smell of some of the foods they sell can be a distraction as well. It can be done without causing too much distraction.

FYI the last important phone call I had to take while I was in a theater was one saying my girlfriend was in the hospital after a bad car wreck. Yea you know how mad I would have been getting that message 3 hours late? I was able to get in and talk to her right before she had to have surgery.

I get emails at all hours of the day and night. Both from clients and from servers. If I have a server issue somewhere I need to know about it. The clients seem to like to email us at some really random hours too.

Yeah, I agree. Why do they sell everything in crunchy plastic?

Hopefully that doesn't happen all the time though.

Yeah. Seems like you don't really have the time to be going to movies with such an important reliance on communication.

Theaters should have private rooms, like porn shops, heh.

Hmm I'm curious how this paint works.

First they can already block any theater from getting cell phone calls by simply imbedding a wiremesh (aka Faraday cage) under all the curtain areas that surround the building, this will keep EM waves out. The wavelength of cell phone signals is HUGE, what do they operate at? 900Mhz or so? You could use a mesh with holes as big as about 1 foot (so chicken wire would do it).

Second, unless my physics fails me, you can only block out EM radiation this way, you can't stop it from going out with a faraday cage. The only way I can really see this working is that it prevents incoming signals, so while your wireless signal is leeching out to the universe, no computer outside of your house can "talk back" to it effectively "Securing" your wireless.

Paint, tape, cages... none of it is worth the cost when the biggest security risk is still the people using the hardware. I've worked around people that tested this stuff over the past two years, it didn't help. And yes, the obligatory and ubiquitous "Pringle's Can" antenna pulled the broadcasts from inside the coated facility right on through - the worst part of all was that the coating was enough to prevent the people inside from ever detecting that they were being snooped on in the first place.

All these passive methods to supress the signals isn't helping, and neither is the encryption in the long run. Point me to someplace that says it's safe, I'll set up within 1 mile of it with a P200 laptop and Back|Track 2.0 and within a week I'll be in - and they'd never know it.

Pentesting ftw!!!

Good! More people have an attitude like yours then there will be fewer disturbances during the movies. If I owned a theater I'd put a Faraday cage around every auditorium and publicize it highly, too. Bet I'd get plenty of business to offset those Crackberry / Cell phone addicts out there. Oh yeah, food and drink are part of the movie going experience. I bet your even interrupt sex for your Crackberry.

“The use of EM-SEC Coating as an electromagnetic barrier"

Wasn't lead outlawed a few decades ago?

I was watching TV one day and I saw something about this paint. Some people did a test to see if it would work and they built this small wooden box and tested the signal. Then they used the paint and it reduced it to a certain amount. As far as I can remember I think they said it was $90 for a gallon of this stuff and was too impractical for home use.

I disagree, I'm all for blocking cell phones inside theaters and schools. Coat-check systems work well, why don't we do something similar with phones? Just because you may remember to silence your phone, must people at the theaters around here don't.
"Hello, sir. Phone please, here's your claim ticket. If it goes off while you're enjoying the show, one of our ushers will come notify you."
And as for schools, same thing. When I was in school (not too long ago), all phone calls went through the main office. If you were needed, you were paged over the PA system. When did that get outdated?

I have given them the option to quieten their 'phones. or for me to quieten them for them on three separate occasions. A Nokia in the face is not as fun a popcorn

whenever I needed to drop a deuce in school I would call my mom to pick me up on my cell. I dont think I would call her for that through the office. Anyways, the people at my school were pricks with the phone and tbh I just don't like talking to people/dealing with people. Why not just use my cell phone. Besides, I used it maybe 1-2x per week, and I went to the bathroom between periods. Not really bothering anyone IMO. All of my friends went to my school, no reason to use a phone.

Again, the rare exception. I know what you mean about not using public restrooms, I used to be the same way. (BTW, please don't be offended: that reminds me of Paul "Shitbreak" Finch, from American Pie. :)) For most students, though, I just can't justify them carrying cell phones on a daily basis.

Because the chances of me handing over my phone to anybody is slim to none. Id say I didn't have one. I don't like coat check either.

I'm starting to realize I'm not a very trusting person.

lol. Stop raggin on the guy we gotta have some people that live their life where they have to drop what there doing to fix something for somebody else. Personally I wouldn't do it but im glad some people will live like that for money. That's why I don't own a cell phone if you need me leave a message i'll get back to you when im not busy doing my own thing.

Great, you can stay home.

You can paint all the rooms and buildings you want. Add to that Farday cages, steel and lead walls and even put a facility 80 stories underground if you like.

What you can’t do anything about is the one big common denominator no one can fix is people. People have data in their heads (some of it even useful) but we all have weak spots. We talk, we write we leave laptops laying about for anyone to take and those are the honest folk. Ponder the not so honest.

Nope, don’t see paint doing much for the really big problem.

A quick blurb on the public cell phone thing. Many of your better theaters have already installed jamming devices for cell phones, so have a lot of restaurants. I stopped going to the movies a long time ago, even a bad choice on a DVD costs less then movie tickets.

That leaves restaurants and I’d love to meet the idiot who took the idea of full duplex communication and decided it was a good reason to reinvent the ubiquitous walky talky. Not happy with being able to sell retro-tech they managed to add the most obnoxious alert noise possible. I’ve also noticed they don’t seem to work so well because from everything I’ve seen and heard you must scream into these little boxes to be heard on the other end. Oh, of course you have to have your listening end turned up far enough so it is crystal clear within a one hundred foot radius.

That of course brings us right back to it’s a people problem

Sweet idea for some, terrible for others. I'm sure some people may like the novelty of this, I personally will stick to non-broadcasting SSID and Encryptions ;-). No, it's not hackerproof but if someone wants access to my wi-fi that badly, they can have it.

I find it curiously interesting to see how heated a topic over paint can become. I do have to side with the individuals rights on this one. If I'm paying a company to service me, I expect to not have my personal rights / freedoms infringed upon. That means I get to use my cellphone if I choose to (This does not however mean I get to be inconsiderate of others - i.e. vibrate). If you'd rather not be disrupted from a people walking around, stay at home. We don't live in the 1950's anymore. Communication is highly important. Don't like it? Invent the time travel device or stay at home. Learn2Libertarian.

Note: To all those that can't wait to come back with a witty remark - I posted this for you :D

Only on hard can you talk about a paint for geeks and have an argument erupt :)

This paint is cool, personally I think this is a good step... it's obviously not for everyone but it at least puts people on the more proactive approach.

Now how much does this cost? I'd like to paint my computer room. Just the thought of being more geeky and hax0r like gives me a smile on my face.

It would be really cool if you could just add something to regular paint and get the same effect. That way there's no worry about color matching.

I wonder who will be the first person to paint their PC case and/or wireless router and thing they're safe. ;)

I hear red tape will protect you from undead bandwidth thieves.

I did some research, and apparently this has been done before:

Note the Christmas lights along the top. These introduce additional interference to thwart the agents of bandwidth theft.
