Well, it depends on what you'll be doing with the computer. That's the bottom line. If you're doing video encoding/editing and heavy multitasking, the Pentium 4 would very likely be a better fit for you.

If you are a single or minor multitasker, and all you do is play games and surf the web, the Athlon would be a much better fit for you.

If you are a heavy multitasker, video editor and gamer, with more money to throw into your upgrade, the X2 would be the best choice. The X2 3800+ is a good overclocker and might be the best choice you could make.

Another reason not to go with the Pentium 4 is the fact that you'll have to replace your motherboard, (If we are talking about the machine in your sig) and then get DDR2 ram to go with it. Not worth while at all IMO.
 
I'd like to know where you're getting a 3500+ San Diego personally.

Edit: I just noticed Fragalot, that if he upgrades to either CPU he will need a new mobo/PSU/video card. He's running Socket A.

Good point. I saw the Athlon 3200+ and I immedately thought it was an Athlon 64.

In that case, it really depends on what the OP is going to do with the system as to what would make the best choice. I still say the X2 is the BEST choice. However it may not fit his budget.
 
Yea I do do some multitasking and I do some PS and Illustrator stuff. I tend to listen to music while doing everything even playing games...so yea i multitask...

But I might just go with a 3200+ now cause I think I want to get a new mp3 player and socket m2 is coming out soon...

but then again I might stick with the 3500+ because of the 1mb L2
 
It really doesn't matter. The difference between lower-end Pentium 4s and Athlon 64s is hardly noticeable (not true of higher end though, in which AMD trashes Intel). My 2.8GHz Prescott with a 6800nu played Quake 4 flawlessly at High detail.

Just go with whatever is easier or more convenient for you. Will you need DDR2 if you go Intel? If so, then going AMD would be cheaper by about $70 since you can just keep your current RAM. If you are looking at a s478 Intel versus a s939 or s754 AMD, I would just go Intel as the performance difference is minimal and Intel has HT.

Also, please do not buy into the "AMD runs cooler" argument. My Prescott idles at 35C and runs 42C fully loaded. Really, there is no difference. In your situation, I would go Intel for a) reliability and b) hyperthreading. At least if you go Intel on a reliable motherboard (ASUS, ABIT, Intel) you know it will work out of the box (barring a DOA product). May I suggest the ABIT IC7-G? I have it and love it, works flawlessly.
 
You need DDR2 ram for almost all the LGA775 socketed motherboards. Theres a few that are still DDR1 compatible. But I think that all the boards you'd want to get that have dual core support for example are DDR2 boards.

You still haven't answered the big question: ARE YOU GOING SOCKET 478 OR 775? I'm guessing 775 after those links, but the way you talk it seems as though you don't know yourself. Give us a link to the motherboard you plan on using.
 
I don't know what mobo, but it would be socket 775

Also I didn't bump after 20min...I was reading my post and saw a really bad typo and I fixed it.
 
Go AMD. You'll have some more headaches setting it up and doing real multi-tasking, like compressing large files while surfing the web, but the performance advantage in games is likely worth it.
 
I don't think he understands the sheer p0w4h of a Opterown running at 2.9GHz give or take a few hundred MHz.
