They're primarily used by people running things like Maya, 3Ds Max, Autocad and others. They aren't designed to be used for gaming.
They're typically more expensive because they receive a different level of support than consumer cards, and typically their parts have higher selection standards to ensure reliability.

Not really needed for CAD, more so for 3D design work. I know what you meant.
