Why doesn't vsync work on AMD cards?

Ever since switching to AMD video cards starting with the 4890 (now on the 6870), I cannot get vsync to work without using a 3rd party program like d3doverider. I set the driver option in catalyst to "off unless app uses vsync" but vsync does not work. This is currently on Far Cry, but other games do the same thing as I recall.

My drivers were just updated last week and the PC is good otherwise. Any tips? I prefer to not use 3rd party programs for this sort of thing.
 
What's the issue here? You are defaulting to have vsync off in the driver if the app doesn't request it to be on. Farcry is not requesting vsync to be on so it is working as intended. You need to change it to be "On, unless application specifies" or "Always on"
 
I also have my VSync set to "Off, unless application specifies" but it works fine as long as I have it enabled in-game. This is the case on both my 2x 4870x2 and 2x 4850 setups.

No matter what I try in catalyst I cannot get vsync to work, that is the issue. To be fair, vsync worked in Dirt 2 and Dirt 3, but not in Far Cry or Dead Space (either one) when using catalyst.

To clarify, I set catalyst to keep vsync off unless app specifies, and in the Far Cry game I turned on vsync. But vsync will not turn on.
 
Test with Vsync "On, unless app specifies" and/or "Always on". I would also check your config files and/or the config files of any mod you have installed because they can have different settings. i.e. the base game could have a *.ini or *.cfg file with vsync on, but a mod could have its *.ini or *.cfg file with vsync off.

No mods installed here on Far Cry or Dead Space. I have already tried those options in the catalyst program and they don't work.
 
Its probably a title issue. Cuz it did the same for my on my 5870 with Far Cry. I would have vsync enabled but it showed 800 fps.

When I used d3doverrider it just made it sutter in Far Cry. Some games don't implement vsync very well at time and forcing vsync can sometimes make it worse.

Have you tried any other games to see if they behave like this? For me it was only a few titles that vsync didn't work when it was enabled
