Why does my system suck?

My system, while not top-of-the-line by any means, should, I think, be able to handle most games at least moderately well. It doesn't. Here are the specs:

Intel Celeron 1700
GeCube Radeon 9600 XT Extreme
256 MB DDR RAM
Windows 2000

I tried running Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004, as well as Chrome; all of them were basically slideshows, even with all of the options on minimum. Interestingly, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time ran beautifully on this same system.

Any ideas what the problem is? Is the processor a bottleneck, and if yes, will I experience a marked improvement in performance by switching to a better processor? Or should I improve some other aspect of the 'puter?

If necessary, I'm prepared to buy a new motherboard as well, so if buying an Athlon is the best way to go, I can do that, too.

Can anyone give an opinion? Thanks.

My main concerns is your processor and memory 256MB isn't allot..

What speed are they?
 
If your on a low budget i would just upgrade the RAM. I would get 512MB or 1GB if you can afford it of PC3200. After that i would upgrade to a Pentium 4 2.8c or Athlon XP 2500+ and get a new motherboard. Those three upgrades will give you a new kickass gaming system.
 
the ram and the processor kinda killin you...if you had to choose to replace one of the two go with the processor first ...cause price of ram is high right now :D:D:D

That's why. Celerons are NOT good gamers, and are much slower than their pentium counter parts (especially at gaming) at the same clock speed.

Ram is second, 256 is not enough for modern games, but it's not holding you back as much as the processor is.

A mobile barton 2400+, an nForce2 mobo and 512 or a gig of RAM would make those games fly :D

You could save some money and wait on the memory. It's currently fairly expensive. If you wait, you could probobly get a gig, two matching sticks of 512, for $200.
 
No one mentioned it, but in case your wondering, your video card is more than capable. It's your other components holding the system back. I love my Celerons for work machines and such...but for gaming....they don't fair very well.
 
512 MB Kingston PC 3200 Value RAM (2x256MB) Circuit City, $69.99 after $23 MIR. Not the world's greatest RAM, but a hell of a price. If a store in your area still has it in stock.
 
Celeron defiantly = no good for games... RAM ain't too hot either... CPU and RAM is what's slowing you.. but i'm sure everyone else here has said the same thing.. i didn't read any of the posts.....
 
Yes 2400+ + NForce2 + pc 3200 ram = one hell of a good gaming system, but not top notch.

Celerons > 700mhz = teh suck

U have a celeron 1700 which i think is the same as a p4 but a celeron. So u take urs minus roughly 20-30% because of long pipelines, etc. and then another 10% or so because its a celeron. So basicly yeah. Get rid of that cpu its holding u back big time.

Woah, does this question even need to be entertained?

Let me just say I use a Celeron 2.0Ghz, 256meg Gateway at work. Its for shipping UPS. I has a hardtime loading Word.

Celeron = poop, shaped into a processor shape.
 
I also used to run the 1.7 Celeron, about two cpu upgrades back, I ran those games pretty decent with a ti4200, when I upgraded my RAM to 512 it made a world of difference. So id do the RAM first and then the cpu, even going to a 2a Pentium your gonna see ALOT better performace.
