Just bought a Viewsonic 32" LCD screen and I cannot display higher than 1024x768 on the screen without having to scroll to see the entire desktop. Is the problem because I am using the svideo output instead of VGA, colorstream or is it because my graphics card (x700pro) is not up to the task??

you can't go any higher via svideo - you need to go to vga, dvi, or component to go any higher. and yes, your video card is fine to do that.

yep go dvi

I've never seen such a thing, would that provide better quality than straight VGA??

yeah so update I bought a VGA cable and everything is cool and it displays the max resolution...btw it is absolutely rediculous having a 32" monitor :p
