Why are LCDs glassless?

I'm sure most of you have seen the kind of fools who insist on touching your LCD to point something out. There's the pretty colors, the panic when you realize how hard they're pressing down, and the shock when they run their finger across the screen to point out something else, leaving a black trail in their fingers wake... It's no wonder you've no faith in humanity.

A thin sheet of glass would prevent this from being a problem... So why don't LCD monitors come with glass in between the user and the LCD?

A sheet of glass, especially thin, could also break easily. It would also make these monitors a lot heavier. It probably wouldn't be safe anymore to lay an LCD down then, say if you had to travel or move or something.

What about plexiglass then? its lighter and stronger then glass...

That actually isn't a bad idea but how thick would it have to be. To thick and it gets too heavy, too thin means that it has zero affect. There must be a magical line their somewhere.

I'm not so sure about plexiglass, it may be lighter and less fragile than glass, but it still scratches.

actually, sony tried the plastic idea on one of their older laptops. PCG-XG500 series, which i still have working just fine, actually has a piece of plastic covering the screen. its held on by 2 tabs on the top, and slides in on the bottom of the screen face. it can be easily removed and cleaned. overtime, in the laptops case, the screen tended to scratch a bit from touching the key pad when it was closed.

I have a nec lcd1765 and it has a glass panel on the front that sits over the actual screen giving it an extremely glossy appearance when using the lcd in well lit rooms.

I can actually use hardforums as a mirror (to see my reflection, not the other mirror) with all the black on it when viewing it on my screen. I would just train my reflexes to slap someones finger away than have to close all my curtains and dim lights to use this monitor. I wish the lcd wasn't as good as it was so atleast I would have an excuse to buy another one.

Plexiglass scratches easy, stains, and can discolor. Plexiglass also adds a lot of weight and increases the profile of the screen. It has to be tick enough to protect but then it's too heavy.

This is why you have companies like dell doing their "ultra" screens for some years, it is the thin plastic coating, it gives that glare and reflection on LCD's.

not having stupid friends who don't realize touching LCDs is bad fixes that problem :)

i just got some new LCD's for work, dell 20.1"

i put a desktop wallpaper that anyone found touching the LCD (fingers, pens, anything) or cleaning it will be replacing and buying a new one, after shipping to costa rica and duty, thats $360 US, so far it was worked.

I own a xerox 19" lcd, it has a fairly thick protective plastic sheet, that protects the actual lcd from anything. The problem with the cover is glare, and its a big problem.

Don't the glossy LCDs already have a hard cover. I wish Dell offered their 2407 in glossy and matte. I would have defintley got the glossy screen, they seem to usually have richer colors and if the screen is hard, it would be more finger resistant.

I think I'd touch it just to spite you.

Sure you would, $350US in costa rica is a HELL of alot of money :)

it can be cleaned, but these are the types of people who use Brasso (an kitchen / oven / grease cleaner) to clean wood desks and past CRT's monitors.

Why are people touching LCDs ? Is it 1997 again or something ? What am I missing here ?

I hate people who touches the screen and yes there are people like that. At my work as a graphic artist I have people do that to my screen constantly its annoying. They would point with their finger and literally touch the lcd screen.

^^^ LOL

some people just feel the need they need to put their finger on it, as opposed to "i can quite put my finger on it" , as if i cant see what they are pointing at with their finger 1inch off the screen.

what i hated is with CRT's people who literally have drawn on the screen with pens, leaving pen ink in the monitor as if worn in and unable to remove.
