Why are Black Pixels not "Defects"?

I've seen this from many panel sellers. They define dead pixels as those stuck "on" at whatever color. But completely dead/black pixels aren't counted. Seems totally weird and a cop-out.
 
Whoa. Are you saying that Black pixels don't matter?


J/K. but tge truth is that light bleeds into dark, not the other way around. So most people are not going to notice a dark pixel, whereas a bright one is hard NOT to notice.
 
Depends if the screen is light or dark at the time. I can spot truly dead pixels easily. Seems to annoy me more.

Because if they had to make 100% perfect panels the price would go up quite a lot. Still a bit of a cop-out but it's price control on their part.
 
Bright pixels are much more distracting than black ones. This is easy to test on your monitor. Just draw a picture with one black pixel on white background and see how far from the screen you can see the pixel. Then draw a picture with one white pixel on black background and compare.

Personally, if I go looking for them, I can just make out the two black (dead) pixels against white background on my 445 ppi smartphone. If I put a full-screen picture with one white pixel on black background, I can see the white pixel, even at the lowest brightness setting, holding the phone hand extended i.e. at a normal monitor viewing distance. If I crank up backlight brightness, I can see the pixel from much further away. It would appear that we are able to discern point sources of light no matter how small if we just increase their brightness enough. That's why we are able to see faraway stars at nighttime.
