BF2 runs kinda shitty not all that smooth. I don't know who to blame I'm thinking it's my video card more than anything. Here's my specs:

x800 pro
4x512mb Hyper X 3500
AMD 3000+ @ 2.56Ghz

Supreme commander and C&C3 all look great, Quake 4 runs I'de say playable without any real issues. But Bf2 just doesn't run that great I kinda thought it's my monitor at first since it's VGA and not a DVI LCD but ehhh I haven't seen much problem anywhere else. Kinda sucks I like my x800pro I mean it runs everything else fine no stupid issues either.

BF2 is pretty demanding, so probably is your video card. It doesn't play that great on my computer either.

never pay attention to the system requirements in the battlefield series. bf2 is very demanding, i play as well and get the occasional lag even with my system (not internet related.) my guess is its the older video card.

What I would like to know is how come a 6800GT can run fear and fear XP better than an x1950pro when its 1.2 generations ahead of the 6800GT.

what resolution are you running at anyway?

You should be able to run medium settings I'm thinking 1280x1024 or 1440x900 widescreen.

When I had x850xt it was able to do everything high 1280x1024 8x AF no AA.

But with x800pro it will not run high settings unless you lower the resolution.

Im dead serious, the default benchmark demo that fear and fear XP have will show you that the x1950pro scores faster fps, but its only in that demo. in multiplayer my frames will goto shit, with the x1950pro, and i can only run fear XP at medium settings with the x1950pro. This is a documented problem with no real solution.

The only known fix is renaming the .exe file for fear because its speculated that ether ATI has some sort of driver "optimization" for fear.exe or even worse, fear is "optimized" to run best to run with Nvidia cards but in reality it just cripples ATI cards. And the .exe rename only works for half the people, and its still not up to 100%,

As for the question of the poster of this topic, Your card should handle BF2 pretty well, but AA and AF hog both vmem and system memory, seeing as you have the 2GB of system memory that BF2 needs, I would say uninstall drivers, use a driver cleaner to get rid of the scraps and reinstall, The x800pro is a generation behind however and it was a midrange card in its day so id say tune down the settings a little bit.

I play BF2 daily with mid-high settings at 1280 res with the rig below that is similar to yours. Maybe update your drivers and do some tweaking. Is the X800 Pro a 12 or 16 pipe card?

I don't really play multiplayer FEAR but when I did try I played fine 1440x900 16xAF 2xAA on my 1900GT which R580core like the 1900xt.

Where was 1950pro thing documented? Got a link or are you still smoking? ;P

Would this chip bottleneck a x1950xt?

You should be fine with your processor. You can always gain more FPS if you get core 2 duo on lower resolutions.

BF2 is actually a CPU hog because so much stuff happens all the time especially with 64 players on a map can be demanding. There's nothing like a 1950xt can't fix though. Why not just go for 8800GTS 320 meg version. They're down to $280 after rebates while 1950xt is $220.

The 3000+ can't be good for bf2. My 3800+/1gb of ddr400 was causing bf2 to stutter at times, esp. when a program was running in the background. I have a sapphire x800gto^2. I recently switched to an e6400 and 2gb of ddr2-800. Still have the x800, and bf2 runs fine.

edit: I do have the x800 overclocked ~15%.

Its not really an x1950 thing as much as it is an ATI cards in general thing, At first I thought it mite of been because the X1950pro and the rv570 chip were so new but im pretty sure its not the case now.

http://www.tweakguides.com/FEAR_8.html, the first paragraph sums it up pretty well but it doesn't competely resolve it (for me) even on 7.2 drivers even tho they mention 5.11s and 6.3s in that link, although fear MP is atleast playable now. There was another (possibly) unrelated problem which actually made fear MP 100% unplayable at any settings, I typically use a PS/2 keyboard simply because there cheap, but if I tried strafe'ing at all, with the forward/backward keys pressed or not, I would literately skip seconds of frames intill about 3 seconds after depressing A or D keys to stop strafe'ing. Using a usb keyboard helped it but not to any significant level. I tested this both before and after a reformat and I would get the same problems, but now seem to be non existent.

Maybe ill install fraps or something and try to get a graph of both cards at the same settings and compare.

Never had a problem with FEAR with what your describing. I was using CCC 6.5 when I first played FEAR though. I played the whole single player on 850xt (my previous card). 1440x900 8xAF and tried the multiplayer as well. Multiplayer sucks for FEAR. Perhaps you have softshadow on. That kills your performance. Or maybe it's your machine/internet specific.

Looking at your signature makes me laugh. It's usually user error or machine incompatibility when something is wrong. Why not just sell your card and get 7900gs or something if you hate ATI cards. I love em more than Geforce 7 series actually.

That was probably because you had 1 gig of ram before.

I am not running with soft shadows on, I believe its impossible to enable soft shadows above 1088xsomthing, one of those random wide screen resolutions without some sort of hack. I run at 1152x864 and currently maxed physics, maxed detail, shadows on (not soft shadows) 0xAA 8xAF in fear combat, where as with the 6800gt I would run everything maxed 2xAA 4xAF, but 8xAF was just as playable. I'm also willing to concede that I may have a bad video card. For example, I run 2 crt monitors, one of them is detected fine by CCC, but I cant reboot w/o removing the other one from its port before I hit windows otherwise it will flicker heavily intill when I log on and the ati tray and CCC loads up in the task manager where it goes blank and there is no possible way to re enable it. Also I cant run @ stock memory clocks (sapphire ultimate = 1600 mhz but CCC defaults to 1400 (reference) and setting it to 1600 results in artifacts in most games after 10-15 minutes).

Prior to me buying the x1950pro I had only 1 other video card (6800GT) and I had no opinion ether way for ATI or nvidia, and the x1950pro was the better buy over the 7900gs, according to reviews and what not and I liked it because I can fold units about 3 times quicker then on cpu while gaining way more points per day.

Also Marvelous, what are your specs seeing as you don't have them listed in your sig, and to my knowledge only about 5% of x1900GT's were unlockable to x1900XT's, im just wondering if yours is actually unlocked.

edit. btw the 1 gig stick of memory im currently running is as stable as any memory gets on this motherboard.

It seems like you might have some problems either some incompatibility with your setup or there is something wrong with your card. If you bought it at newegg they will RMA through newegg for the warranty period. At least I've done exchanges after 30 day return policy.

I don't run dual monitors so I can't really comment. But if you did buy a card to run at specific speeds you should be able to run it at that speed. I think you should totally RMA the card as it seems you're having more problems than meets the eye. You might want to format your system before you RMA if that cures it or not.

FEAR is one of those games you might need more than 1 gig of ram as well. At least for me it used to swap like crazy when I only had 1 gig of ram.

My 1900gt doesn't unlock since it's revision 2. But it does overclock. :) I'm running the memory at 840 or 1680 DDR. :D Not too much on the core. My specs are top secret but if you follow my posts it mentions what I have. ;)

Considering a 8800 bottlenecks some core2duos I'm not even going to put them in the list of upgrades here, but a x1950xt would be up my 3000+'s alley wouldn't it?

I think you should add $60 and go for 8800gts. Don't waste money on dx9 cards unless you get them for dirty cheap.

If I were you, id try to hold out Intill nvidia and ATI release there midrange cards, The only DX10 game that I can think of which will be out before then is stalker, but if you have the money now, go for the 320MB 8800GTS, I mean yeah your processor is going to bottleneck it, but its not like your going to knotice unless the processor isn't fast enough for the game in the first place, which shouldn't be an issue unless your running games on top of vista w/ aero glass.

Totally. Battlefield 2 and 2142 run like dead donkeys with only 1 GB of RAM.

QFT. Shit, BF2 isn't even a CPU hog, my Athlon XP 3200+ chewed through it with a vanilla 6800. Even a 3000+ A64 and a X800 Pro should be running it fine, it could be just the drivers or he needs to reinstall BF2.

well ure running an xp :D , the xp series performed miracles my old 2800 did pretty much anything i threw at it.

well I saw the x1950xt for $200 on newegg where are the 8800gts's going for $260ish w/out rebate?

You can get them for $270. I see the 1950xt is $200 after rebates. There wasn't rebates before so I was quoting then.

Up to you dude. Whatever you want. But if I was in your shoes well I would go for 8800gts if you're already going to shell out $220 before rebates. It's just a different breed of card and dx 10 support. Should last you long time and then some.

I think for the time being I'll keep to my rule of a card around $150. 7900gs-x1950pro best deal for the least amount. Really need something that plays BF2 well and maybe few other new games that are coming out here.

That's what I have. A 1900gt. It still performs for fractions of the cost.

You can get a 1950gt for $125 after rebates.

I tried FEAR multiplayer again. It works great. I'm getting mostly 50-140fps @ 1440x900 2xAA 16xAF. You're definitely having some issues with your computer/card.

The only thing I can think of which could be causing the problem in fear MP is lack of memory bandwidth because A. I currently am running single channel, B. I used to have dual channel memory @ 230 mhz @ 2-2-2-7 (ocz VX). Now I am aware, much like BF2, fear drags its feet w/o 2 gigs of memory, but that never seemed to be a problem before running at 1152x864 @ max settings + 2x AA, 8x AF with no noticeable slowdowns at any point. Now going thru smoke filled areas my frames just hit a wall, and if the server is busy, my fps will tank everytime I respawn. Its like its struggling to access textures in memory or something.

Fear XP is about 10x worse, i got everything except lighting on medium, 0AA, 4x AF, and everytime i walk into a room or drop down somewhere, it will briefly skip, then slowly go back to normal FPS. And fear XP is supposed to be optimized to be faster than the original.

I'm not sure how much fault this could be of the x1950pro's, it scores 4300 something in 3dmark06 (normal) and does fine in cs source fully maxed (except it can get questionable at times now)

Fear XP was meant to be more stressful on GFX than the original because of more textures and newer effects. Never heard about it being supposedly more optimized.

I've got 5352 for 3dmark 2006.

I'm using a 1900gt overclocked to little beyond 1950pro speeds with core 2 duo @ 3.0ghz.

4300 doesn't seem bad since my CPU is much faster.

So in smoke your hard drive is swapping? Look at hard drive light and you should know this.

You definitely need ANOTHER 512meg or 1gig ram to run BF2. Fear I got away with 1 gig ram but it still swaps hard drive and feels jerky.

Dual channel doesn't really do crap except you might gain 1-2 fps more.

You might want to uninstall drivers and clean them out and install again and turn stuff off on your taskbar . AND OR add more ram.

I clean my drivers out often, usually gives me a little bottom end but nothing significant, and im waiting on OCZ about my memory, with any luck they give me MSRP for my memory in aug 05 (since its EOL now) and I get a 2 gig kit, I know my hd swaps a good bit but it seems worse now.

I'm hopping this deal I got going down soon will yield me a 7900GT (long story), if not I guess I got to RMA my x1950pro and hope to get one that can handle stock speeds.

It could be that CCC drivers use up more ram than Nvidia drivers. Since you have to load up Microsoft Net frames.

Right now I'm only on 1.5gigs of ram. It works for BF2 and any game I throw at it although in BF2 if I run anything else on the background I start swapping a little. I'm trying to upgrade though but no one wants to buy my old ram.
