White residue?

I've been running my watercooling set up since august. I noticed at the waterline in my bayres there's a line of white residue. Is this normal?

I'm using distilled water mixed with swiftech's stuff.

This is a type of algae (SP?) I believe. I have it also in my system and I've cleaned it out once. It isn't too noticable when the system is running but if I turn my PC off for a while and it settles you can definatly see it. I dont think it hurts anything as far as I have seen with my performance. I use it to make sure my watercooling is running as I can see it floating around when it's on. Sometimes I'll get to a lan and get a air bubble and I know right away cuz my white stuff isn't moving around in my bay res! Hope this helps.

I have some crusty like stuff too that clouds my tubes and res but it hasn't really caused any problems. I'm running distilled water with a little bit of bleach and it has never given me trouble more than weird looks.

I used to have this problem all the time. I was having to change out my tubing every couple months cause it was so bad. I tried flushing the system, using algae tabs, bleach, you name it. Finally, I started using simple green and it works GREAT. I originally put about a teaspoon of it in there just to flush the system when I first changed the tubing last time, but I got lazy and left it in there. It's been two months now without so much as a speck of that white crap, and simple green is non-toxic.

Which formulation of Simple Green? There's Lime Scale remover, Anti Bacterial, etc...?

I have also had problems with the white residu, and I use anti-algae stuff from the pet store in steam-distilled, reverse osmosis filtered water (and a bit of Hydrex, which I am not going to use anymore).

I think it may be linked to the white residu. Not really sure though. I have had the white buildup in all of my tubing so far (Clearflex 60, Tygon R3504, and PrimoFlex), and Hydrex is the only common factor. Most of the tubing people use is not actually rated for chemical use, especially the Tygon R-3504 (which is what most water cooling web sites sell). It may be a reaction with the tubing or something in the water mixture clinging to the tubing, but I think it is related to the Hydrex.

My next tubing change is going to be Tygon R-1000 and the steam distilled, reverse osmosis filtered water, the anti-alge stuff from the pet store (which BTW has not been in all of my water/tubing changes), and possibly some of the simple green antibacterial formulae (maby). The tubing is also going to be steam sanitized before putting everything together to kill anything in there before it gets into the water. I will let you all know how it works out with the white build-up.

Tygon Tubing Product Page

Buy Tygon R-1000 at reasonable prices...
Some might say that $3.96 per foot (1/2" i.d., 3/4" o.d.) is outrageous, but when compared to what water cooling websites sell, this stuff is much better.

All Tygon products...

I didn't know simple green made different kinds now. I just used the plain old simple green you buy at pepboys.

Ive bought R1000 from us plastics before. Just so you know, i dont know how they store thier tubing but mine came very dirty. Pre cleaning it is a good idea. Also where can i get this water you guys speak of? I can only find a few distilled waters here and none say what process was used.

Here is a link for 'ya... They make all kinds now and they have the MSDS sheets w/ active ingredients so as we can tell in advance if it will eat our tubing away... :p

Thanks for the heads-up on the dirt. It will get cleaned no matter what before it gets used. The distilled water I use comes from CVS Pharmacies. It's the only place around here that carries filtered, distilled water. The grocery store has both steam distilled AND reverse-osmosis filtered, but not in the same bottle... The reason for using steam distilled, reverse-osmosis filtered water is the lack of minerals and microbes.

Oh, almost forgot one more important thing if you can get it (in distilled water), and that's ozone treated. The stuff at CVS had all three processes done ot it, and this stuff is supposed to be the best. I think my growth problem comes from the lack of sanitizing the tubing before putting it into use.

I`ve got this white stuff on my tubes but only afte i took out the water from my system. A white film started forming on the inside and this was only after running the system an hour and with distilled water. I was leak testing. So it cant be a chemical reaction or algea. I think its just residue that is in the tubes or inside pumps from the manufacturing process. If you touch it it feels kinda greasey like oil. I think cleaning out the tubes, block, pumps, and rad will get rid of it.

Just curious, the guys that are getting thw white junk, are you guys turning the pumps off? Or is your pump on 24/7?

According to the people over at aqua-computer, this residue is oily, mainly from the rads manufacturing. Try putting a small amount of dish cleaner in your loop and see if it disappears or shrinks. Repeat until gone, then bleed, flush, refill.

The problem with that theory is oil would not flake off of the inside of the tubing. It would still be viscous and not hard & crusty like most people report. That might hold true with Aqua components though.
