I would never recommend a multi-gpu setup when you can get performance in the ballpark from a single gpu.

Same here, Other than it being a serious hobbie, I don't see the sense in it. And yes Iv'e done it, three times!

I'd get one 6950 (or whatever the hell is supposed to replace the 5850 is called) if it produces the same jump in performance the 6870 showed over the 5770 with the same relative price difference.

Or just one 6870 will do fine

Vsync works in the control panel now with directx? It's been a while. I have a 6870 on the way and that would be a big plus tbh.

Anyways, what happens when the x2 doesn't scale? One of the big ones for me was Morrowind with a ton of mods. It was running great on my 280. I installed the x2 and my framerate was in the crapper. Oblivion wasn't much better. I didn't have much luck with a modded Stalker install either. Darkplaces, same deal. I play other demanding games than just the top games on the review sites and that seemed to be where crossfire just blows.

Crysis was a good example of a game where I had higher framerates than my GTX280 but it almost felt like the x2 was running slower. I never noticed a "microstutter" but the larger framerate swings than you'll see on a single gpu setup are what I think irritated me.

Even if there is no scaling in that game...One 4870 could EASILY run Morrowind 4 times over, I remember my 8800GTX could run oblivion maxed out with texture packs @ 1680x1050.

What resolution do you run at?? scaling generally improves as the resolution (or stress) is higher, I certainly wouldn't need a card this strong on my old 1680x1050 but at 1920x1200 it's great. Stalker has never given me trouble either, and I saw a huge performance jump from my old c216 GTX260.

If you're happy with your 280 than cool, I never said they were bad cards, just overpriced cards.

I don't care if old games dont scale well because one 4870 1GB can handle them, and anything new I've played has great scaling and things run like butter.

Crysis ran playable at 1920x1200 maxed out with this thing.
