Hi,
a while ago i was recommended to get a radeon 5770 to go along with:

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT55TFBGRBOX

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851&cm_re=x61055t-_-19-103-851-_-Product

GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128444&cm_re=ga_880-_-13-128-444-_-Product

for the purpose of gaming (starcraft 2 primarily), but when i typed in radeon 5770 into the newegg.com search bar, it turns out that there is more than one radeon 5770. So can someone help me figure out which one it is or if you know of a better video card that is compatible with these pieces for about $180-$200.

I may be asking for a lot but I also have another question and that is i was also recommended a corsair 750w power supply to power these things, but it turns out there are three of these on newegg, maybe you can help figure out which one i should take?

There isn't a single company that produces radeon based video cards. In theory all the 5770's will perform about the same. In reality there are smaller differences like factory overclocking, method of cooling and overall reliability that makes one "better" than the other. If you don't have a strong preference for a certain type of cooling etc, or a brand preference, just weight price and reviews into which model you choose. A product with poor reviews may be more likely to have problems etc. However, if your price range is upwards of $200, a Nvidia GTX 460 would be a significantly better performer.

For power supplies, I think 750 watts may be overkill for your setup. Corsair is an awesome brand, and generally the price difference of a good power supply brand and model is worth it. The corsair 650tx is a great model and will fit your needs fine.

But i bet you could go with something even lower wattage, in which case I would recommend something like an Antec Neo Eco or Antec Earthwatts. Other posters might have more advice on that subject.

for 199 you can get a gtx460 768mb, its significantly more powerful than a 5770. stay away from palit, but just about any other brand would be fine. if you are willing to spend an extra $30 you can get the gtx460 1gb.

if you are set on getting a 5770 check out XFX. this version: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150447&cm_re=5770-_-14-150-447-_-Product i believe comes with a reference cooler. XFX has double lifetime warranty which is great in case you sell the card as the buyer would be protected by the second lifetime warranty.

a 750w PSU is overkill for your build whichever card you get. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005 would do just fine.

this is a great PSU at an even better price
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151096

you could really get away with a smaller one, but the 550w corsair is still $85 so you might as well get the 650 or that seasonic.

edit* damn wizang beat me to it while i was typing my post =P

Go with a reputable brand and you'll be fine. The cheapest reputable 5770 on Newegg is this one ($130 after rebate), though you may find other deals from other sources:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...2873&cm_re=Radeon_5770-_-14-102-873-_-Product

A 5770 is fine for SC2 up to 1920x1200 on Ultra detail settings without AA turned on (which kills both NV and ATI cards). And you could crossfire it later if you really need more horsepower... the 5770 crossfires very well; it's just the 58xx series that has issues. Hell, you could even overclock a single 5770 and it would handle 2560x1600, too, unless you're one of "those" people who insists that 30fps minimums aren't enough.

http://www.techspot.com/review/305-starcraft2-performance/page7.html

I would take with a grain of salt the people who claim that the GTX 460 is a better buy. The 768MB version of the GTX 460 sells for ~$200. This chart shows the performance comparisons for lots of cards on lots of games, averaged out and sorted by resolution:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Axle/GeForce_GTX_460_768_MB/31.html

As you can see, across all resolutions averaged out, the $200 GTX 460 card is 19% faster than the HD 5770 (1 divided by 0.84), but it costs 54% more. I wouldn't pay 54% more to get 19% more performance unless you really need it, and the fact that you are looking at a 5770 at all (rather than a GTX 480 or HD 5870 or something) implies that you want a good price/performance ratio that can still handle SC2, and aren't willing to pay a lot to get a little more performance. If you need the 19% performance that badly, just overclock the 5770 or turn down graphics settings to High or whatever. But a 5770 should be fine for SC2 up to at least 1920x1200 Ultra.

(Note: the SC2 performance chart is using a 1GB GTX 460, not a 768MB version. The 1 GB GTX 460 costs ~$230, not ~$200. And it has pretty shitty price/performance compared to the 5770 as well. Using the same techpowerup chart, it's on average 29% faster than a 5770, but it costs 77% more. 230/130 = 1.77 And yeah there are some GTX 460s with small discounts, like $10 or less, but they have noisy coolers or are of dubious brands, and even if you take their prices to be $220/190 the 5770 still has better price/performance by far.)

By the way, SC2 is actually CPU-bound for many systems; there was an article about that recently. SC2 can only use up to 2 cores, so 2 fast cores is better than 6 slow ones. Nevertheless, your CPU should be more than enough for SC2.

an XFX would be my pick, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150447

you really don't need a 750 psu to run that system, that is a good psu your talking about ( I use it) but its over kill for what your talking about.

you could run that system with one of these and save the money
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139017 52 dollars shipped.

the 750XT is an awesome buy at 92 dollars shipped AR of 20 but if your budget is tight you just really don't need it.

I have to say that its hard picking a video card, but the charts Blastingcap put up are helpful, i will continue to look over them tomorow.

I noticed those power supplies are at 400 something Ws, b/c i have a 500W earthwatts antec right now and was told its not strong enough. I guess ill try my 500W when i figure out which video card to go with.

Thanks for everyones help so far.

well that would have been good to know, your current PSU looks plenty powerful to handle either card with that build. save yourself some dough and dont buy a new PSU.

i would agree that a $130 5770 is a great deal, but i personally dont have good experience with MIRs so i dont factor that in to my equation. still if i had $200 to spend on a video card i would get the 460 over the 5770 every day of the week, its just more powerful. about 20% more depending on tests. i realize the price gap is a little wider than 20%, but its a better card that is near the performance of the significantly more expensive radeon hd5850.

i will try my 500w and if it dont work ill get that 650w psu.

So i will go with gtx 460 1gb, can someone show me (link) of the one they would get because there are a lot to choose from.

I have two more questions, when you upgrade your processor, mobo, and video card with the stuff i did, does that mean i have to change my hard drive or some other piece of my computer because of incompatibility?

The other question is when i put all these pieces together, is it possible that something may break when i turn on the computer because i havent changed these pieces before? Im thinking on the lines of incompatibility and such things.

the best is to reinstall your OS when you replace processor, mobo AND video card... too many variables and drivers to worry about....

its possible to break something if you install it incorrectly or scrap something off while installing... just make sure the mobo supports your processor, GPU itself should be fine, and you take your time to screw things in...

ok, will do.

Now just, which gtx 460 1 gb would be the one to get off newegg?

that's fine, better then I suggested. it will run a 5770 and your system no sweat.

are we talking unbearably loud or .....?

no, not at all or I would not have suggested. H has the review of it if you want to read it. it will not be as quite as the 5770 though. still I like that flip design, you can actually clean it without having to dissemble the damn thing.

i would go with the gigabyte or the MSI over the galaxy card. yes the galaxy is overclocked, but that fan is cheap and prone to breakage. however there is a galaxy rep on the boards who has been assisting people with that issue.

i still think that http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...151096&cm_re=seasonic-_-17-151-096-_-Product] is the best PSU option for your money if you absolutely have to upgrade. its $69, [H]ocp vetted, and SeaSonic is a trusted brand. however, your 500w antec earthwatts should do just fine.

As i was about to buy that galaxy, i saw that i had to pay $17 tax and another $7 for shipping, and i dont really feel like paying for that.

I came across this EVGA Geforce gtx 460 1 gb

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0567&cm_re=gtx_460_1gb-_-14-130-567-_-Product

im cool with the price, but what im having trouble with is that the newegg reviews say that its noisy, but i came across another thread in this video card section with this review posted

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0567&cm_re=gtx_460_1gb-_-14-130-567-_-Product

and here it says that card makes minimal noise.

that is an external exhaust version and lots of people claim that they are noisy. Enough so that evga has come out with regular fan versions.

What state are you in so we can figure out sales tax?

Can you help me find this regular fan version, whats the price of it?

I read that Nvidia claims that a very large percentage of the 460 gpus could run at 800MHz.

You could probably overclock both of those cards to about that range or higher.

since its already oc'd does that make it any harder to oc further or does evga maybe put some kind of limit on oc'ing when they do that?

its not going to make it any harder to OC, but there is a chance your card will not be able to OC at all, its a risk that comes with any video card. most 460s seem to be able to OC very well, i think 800mhz is doable with just about any brand of 460.

the gigabyte and MSI cards are mildly OCed from the factory aswell and they cost a little less than the EVGA version if i remember correctly. some people think the external exhaust on the evga 460s is loud, some dont. im in the latter category, i cant hear it over my case fans. you will also want to note that some of the evga cards come with lifetime warranty and some only come with a 2 year. the lifetime warranty is not available on the reference style cooler cards, so if that is a concern to you you may want to get the EE.

i think two years will be long enough. ill probably just buy a new one at that time if this one breaks after the warranty expires.

Thanks for all your help.
