I ordered one of these a few days ago and would prefer not to have to buy another psu to run this thing. Both of the psu's I have are reputable brands, not generic. One has a single 36a 12v rail and one has dual 12v rails with 16a and 18a, respectively.

I know that 36>16+18, but I'm not sure of the benefits of having dual rails, if it helps reduce dips or whatnot.

Which looks like a better option? Are either of them really acceptable?

Dual rails are effective at splitting loads...but you cannot simply add the two 12v rails together. For example, mine is a 550 watt Mushkin, with two 20a rails...the total combined amperage the unit can output is 28a though (mushkin is one of the few brands nice enough to actually state the actual).

If you have a psu with a single 36a rail, this should be more than enough. Please do let us know the wattage and make/model too!
 
Yeah, I decided to use the single rail psu.

It is a SPARKLE FSP550-60PLG 550W

The other was an Ultra X-finity DR 500w

Yes, I know, Sparkle is the obvious choice...I just wasn't sure if dual rails helped anything.

Good choice actually, if i recall correctly, SPARKLE is a Fortron made...yep.FSP550. They make great PSU's, whereas Ultra can be iffy at times

Getting a reputable brand is important for sure, but with the 2900XT a 550w PSU is the bare minimum to run it. Depending on the rest of your system and if you want to overclock it, you'll need something in the 700w+ range with dual GPU power cables. If you don't o/c probably a good 600-650 watter will be OK.
