Which proc for gaming?

Im asking this in both Processor forums.

Which of these 2 processors would be better for gaming:

Intel Pentium 4, 2.0GHZ (Socket 478)

AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (Dunno which socket, 462 or something like that)

So, for just gaming, which one?

Thanks

Both are not that great. Is mx440 the card that you will be using?

Im leaning towards the P4. although if you had a AXP 2000/2200, I would go with that.

Hehe, really, is that a machine you expect to run 2004/2005 circa stuff on, or is that a machine for your child/toddler? If it is for your youngun, either would probably be fine.

Ya I know there old, The P4 is my current system (see sig) and the AMD is one my dads friend gave to me (for free). Im a bit more inclined to the AMD one since it has 512mb of ram (ass apposed to my 256).

(Not gonna OC any also)

Which motherboard has the better features? I'd say both procs are about the same, the P4 edging out a bit...

I'd just take the memory from the AMD, stuff it in your machine, and be done with it. Or... pull a 256 from the AMD and put it into your Intel box and use the AMD for a second machine. Very handy when playing an MMORPG since you can check websites, e-mail, ICQ, etc without alt-tabbing... or you can do homework while you game :D

See if someone will buy the AMD parts and then upgrade your video card.

Works wonders for me, doesn't feel like I'm grinding homework and the quality of my work hasn't suffered much. Last 3 papers I turned in for Eng. 102 were in the 95+% range.

I cant put the AMD ram (512) in the P4 system, since my Mobo doesnt support DDR2700 (which is what the amd ram is)

Hes (my dads friend) is giving me his old vid card also today, Ill see what it is, and make my desision.

it is an issue of the board not supporting pc2700 speed ram, or an issue of the p4 board taking RDRAM?
if it takes ddr, any type, the 2700 will work.

it only takes SDram

I while ago I tried putting in a 512mb DDR chip, and it didnt work.

Which is when I pulled out my manual and found out that DDR didnt work.

Since Im saving up for a new computer, I dont really want to spend anything (I already have a ase and monitor) so dont feel like spending money on a new SDRam chip for my P4 system

ouch. that p4 is going to be super bandwidth starved with sdram... the AMD system might just edge it...

The AMD system is going to be faster most of the time, given the same graphics card. Not only are you going from SD to DD you're going from 256MB to 512MB. Only in a few circumstances is that P4 system going to be better, and gaming does not seem likely to be one of them imo.

hell, id be happy with what you got, im poor as hell and stuck with a comp my mom bought from QVC 4 years ago :p, anyways id go with the amd it be faster with what you got now

Back then ddr was just marketing, the 1800 was not capable of taking advantage of the added bandwidth so its a mute point

Wrong.

At the time, AMD procs ran on a DDR bus already, (EV6/S2K), and they DID show a performance increase when coupled with a decent chipset. (The only chipset that really 'stunk up the place' was the original KT266... the KT266a was pretty good for its time.)

Also, I believe you mean to say "moot", as opposed to "mute". (Not to be rude.)

LOL, the same exact thing happened to me. I had a P4 2.0 Compaq and got a nice Athlon 1800 from my Dad's friend. I overclocked the 1800 and tweaked it. Initially, I thought it was better, but I ended up going back to the P4. It scored 400 points higher in 3DMark without any overclocking. The Athlon had a better PSU and memory too so I switched them and the P4 runs great.

Oops, I just saw it doesn't take DDR. In that case go with the AMD. Although, I would recommend selling the motherboard, cpu, and memory off of the P4 for like $75 and sell the whole AMD machine for like $250 which is what I just did. Then buy a refrubished Chaintech motherboard off of NewEgg for $30. Get a P4 2.4 and 512 pc3200 off of New Egg too. Your pc will be a lot faster and you will probably come out a few bucks ahead.
