which one is better

i mean which one is faster? (1x500GB vs. 2x250GB SATAII HD)

if i buy external sata enclouse, and put in the 80GB SATAI for booting up system.

you've hit on a question that will get some strong replies.
RAID 0 should be faster but many claim it doesnt help.
Personally I wouldnt use RAID 0, everyone i know who has done so lost 2 drives worth of data!
RAID 5 is the minimum I would use but given the choice you gave I'd take the 500GB :)

500GB drives generally have a higher data density than the 250GB drives so will have a higher data transfer rate if comparing single drives.
If the issues with RAID 0 speed are correct, the 500Gb could be faster than RAID 0 too.

You were asking about 250Gb and 500Gb drives.

For a general purpose/programming/gaming rig I'd go with 2 250s if you have plenty of room for expansion or don't mind pitching perfectly good disks if you run out of space. Just not in raid-0. I'd run them as separate volumes. If you're short on room (small form factor or something) I'd go with the 500.
Most of the time raid-0 provides little or no performance benefit, but multiple volumes slices up IO load by task. For gaming the optimal setup is OS on one physical volume, game on another, and enough ram that you never swap. If you do swap (get more ram... skip the 2nd drive if you have to) put swap on the OS drive if you don't have a 3rd drive to put it on.

I'd probably partition them like this:

Drive 0 (boot):
OS + swap
Data

Drive 1:
Apps & games

That setup assumes you have plenty of ram though. If you're swapping when running heavy apps but not in games, I'd do something like this:
Drive 0:
OS + swap
Apps

Drive 1:
Data

If Windows XP & 2000 weren't brain-damaged & supported software raid-1 like Windows Server does I'd add a small partition to both disks for important stuff & raid the partitions. You need Server or Linux, etc. for that though. It's no substitute for backups, but still nice to have if you can do it.

If the external SATA drive is running from a SATA controller then there wont be a difference.
You must mean SATA vs USB, in which case, SATA will be faster.
SATA has 1.5GB/s, SATA II 3.0GB/s transfer rate, compared to 0.48GB/s from USB 2
 
okay i am trying to make it a SSF + HTPC system.

i think 80G SATAI is good for OS booting.

Drive 0:

80GB

os+swaps+apps

or maybe i will buy 160GB for it

Drive 1:

500GB

movies,gaming, data and stuff like
 
An 80GB drive will be WAY slower than a modern 200GB or higher hard drive.
I always install windows on the fastest drive, after all, I buy them to get more space and speed :)

I'd boot from the 500GB.
 
I havent seen any fast drives from samsung for a while.
I'd get performance data from the web first but my inital checks show the samsung isnt as fast as similar drives.
 
what about 74 raptors or 150 raptors?

do you think 74 raptors is enough for os+swaps+apps.

and of course i will be upgrading to Vista when they arrive in public.
 
yes, the 74GB raptor is a good drive. Its easily enough for me, my windows and apps are on a 20GB partition. My swapfile is on another drive.
The 150GB is an even better drive :)
