I am upgrading my video I have a 250 budget,but I am limited on where I can buy from (pretty much have to buy this from Best Buy).
Current setup
GA-990FXA-UD5 w/ AMD FX-4300
16 gig
dual 9800GTX+ w/512meg in SLI,

I am looking at either a R9 280 w/3g ddr5 (R9280-DC2T-3GD5) or a R9 270x w/4g ddr5 (R9270X-DC2T-4GD5 or GV-R927XOC-4GD). I am leaning to the 280 but I am not sure if the extra gig of memory will make a difference or not, and for now will be running a single card.

What are your picks of the three. I hate buying anything from Best Buy, but I won a giftcard with strings. Its a prepaid center card and can only be used at certain places.
 
if best buy its the only option.. then R9 280 hands down.. overclock it and you will be near 280X performance... i would also be thinking in replace that CPU as you may hurt the performance of those cards just as advice..
 
new and like new 280 and 280x are going cheap on ebay (sub $190)
I bought my BNIB msi 280 with warranty til 2017 for $160 shipped.

Then what happens when you OC the 280x?

I agree though, the 280 would be a better bet IMO. Should be able to get a good little amount back from your old cards in a local sale too.

sadly, 280X aren't good overclockers as most of the cards are already factory overclocked... my gigabyte its already at 1100mhz core with stock 1500mhz memory, The Asus Top its 1070mhz with 1600mhz memory.. and both cards overclock more or less to the same limit 1140mhz-1150mhz and the performance gain with the core its nothing too great for the increased power consumption and temperatures in some cards(good aftermarket cards see practically no difference in temps if the cooler and fan profiles are good), in the other hand the vRAM clock help a lot due to greatly increased bandwidth without affect powers and temps.. if you mod the Bios and under water you may want reach 1200mhz-1250mhz with fully increased voltage but i would only recommend a 280X with 8+8pin as 8+6Pin are already close to their power limit.
