Ok, i have a heat sink that came with my computer, and then my friend just gave me this random heat sink that he had. Which one is better? i know neither are superb, but which one is better till i get around to getting a new one?

the pictures are a little big, i resized them, but still made the kinda large for detail

The one labled '2' is the stock one. The one labled '1' is the one that i was given.

I would guess the stock one...it has more surface area to conduct heat...the 2nd one has many more cooling fins but the bottom surface area is small so although it may sink heat faster it also will require a better fan to keep it cool.

This comment makes no sense at all. The new heatsink you were given will be better, since it has more fins and therefore more surface area to transfer its heat to the air. The difference probably won't be particularly noticeable though.

alright, cool, ill switch it out.

Do any of yall know a good after market heat sink? disperses alot of heat, keeps stuff cool?

Consider the following:
You say your stock heatsink is the left one. That's a PGA478 heatsink.
The one on the right is LGA775-ish. The mounting bracket and mechanism is entirely different.

Of course, if it fits... go right ahead.

If you're planning on putting this on top of your processor... well, I don't think you can. Unless you plan on using epoxy or something.

There are many good aftermarket heatsinks, it all depends on the socket you need it for and the price range you're looking at.

What I want to know is does it really matter. I mean will the difference be that big between those two?

Well, to find out the time needs to be invested. There's no magic way to find out how big a difference there will be. It's not even your issue, what difference does it make to you anyway?

Its ok if you don't understand. To put it more clear. It would be a waste of time to benchmark those two heatsink because really, i'm sure there is no difference. Like it is a waste of time for me to reply to you, but since I have nothing else at the moment, you'll keep me entertained. Work for a corporation, then you'll understand. Its like asking is the Honda Civic DX better than the EX in performance. Last time I check they both perform the same beside some power features added to the EX. By the way, I'm not a fan of Honda.

ok, since i had nothing to do yesterday, i tested them. I got some of the 'goop' for the '2' heat sink. The '1' heat sink had 2 degree celcius lower temps then the '2' heat sink. So, i will be sticking with '1'
