I've been using the intel raid 5 controller for sometime now, but after many failures I'm completely fed up with it and decided that I need a hardware raid controller.

I need a controller that supports 8 hard drives. It is primarily used as a download client and media streaming. I don't use it for intensive computing.

Can anyone recommend me a reliabile controller card?

Do you have a budget? What OS will it be running under? What sort of hard drives, SAS or SATA? Is it to support hot plug drives?

I'd like to pay no more than $300 for the controller.

I plan on using windows 7 x64 ultimate, however, since this will be a dedicated media/htpc/file storage pc is WHS a better route for me to take?

All of my hard drives are SATA. Hot plug would be nice, is this determined by the hard drives i own?

I currently have two types of hard drives. They are all 2tb with samsung spinpoint F4's and western digital greens.

This seems to be a good card, although I have no direct experience with LSI cards and they seem to have some compatibility issues with Gigabyte motherboards. I don't know that WHS would be a better fit for you, it may be, I have never used it. The question about hot plug was more one of curiosity then anything else, but there are bays you can buy for hot plug drives, depends on what kind of case you are using.
