Which CPU would be better in this situation

if you have the cash, a dual opteron or intel Xeon will be good
what is the program used for 3d modeling?
my brother is a 3d modeler and got an intel pentium 4 3.4 ghz
he has used cinema 4d and one can see the program supporting hyperthreading
when he renders, the render is divided into two sections

To be totally honest here, altough i favor the AMD processors, if you want good render times etc, you would want a P4 w/ Hyper Threading, 3d software loves hyper threading. If you have the cash a Dual Xeon w/ Hyper Threading would be better most 3d software uses both procs and the Hyper Threading. Alos remeber 3d animation also relies alot on the RAM/Vid Card. Get at leas 1 gig of ram, and if you have a crap load of money, get a nVidia Quadro FX or ATI FireGL, the FireGL is just as good and alot cheaper. Good Luck!

Sure thats what I use. And 3ds Max would love a Intel with hyper threading. 2 would be utter joy for Max.

I agree with most here, but my vote would be for the ATI Radeon 9800XT for the Rendering. It has the fast core processor, not to mention the DDR memory behind it. IIRC, don't the FireGLs have a slower processor?
Oh yes, the processors. I would definitely go the INtel dual Xeon. At least a P4 3.0 GHz. Raptor HD and at least 1 GB of RAM, maybe 2GB if that can be swung.

Acutally its exactly the same as the 9800XT in terms of the core and ram, well the FireGL X2-256t. But the major differances is its tweaked for realtime rendering like working in a 3d enviorment, and it has OpenGL shader langauges which is important in 3d anaimation video card. The 9800XT will do just fine, but if you can get the FireGL.
