I have a SG02 micro ATX case with a Seasonic 520W PSU and the NT06-E cooler -- this makes for a pleasant, quiet desktop as there are only two fans: the GPU (it's a 7770, very low idle noise) and the PSU.
Now, I have a task which is mostly CPU bound (almost to the point of a synthetic benchmark). Most of the time I want to run one of it, very occasionally I'll need to run a lot of them where I can control how many execute in parallel. (For example think of compiling a single program vs make -j N)
So, I am looking at single thread performance. I am using http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html this although I have no idea how reliable it is but it looks sensible.
The i3-4340 jumps at me -- 54W and even the most expensive Xeons only beat it by 8% and the most expensive i7 only by 6%. I won't buy a Xeon, though.
Looking higher, the i7-4770S less than 1% slower than the i7-4770K / 4771. That's laughable and yet it's 65W which fits the NT06-E just fine.
And then we have the i7-4770K. That would only make sense if I could overclock it by a good 10-20% but that perhaps would require a whole new case? The case has a CPU fan clearance of 82mm and of course Silverstone now has the NT06-Pro with a bottom fan which can be exchanged for any 120x25mm fan (Noctua NF-F12 is best, right?) for as much as 130W TDP. (And of course there are a great many coolers fitting in 82mm)
So the questions:
a) is that list accurate?
b) how brutal cooling do you need to overclock the 4770K? Is there a way to get within the confines of an SG02?
