I've just gotten my hands on (from hand-me-down processes) an XFX R7 260X and a Sapphire 6870. My computer only has the power supply to run one, and I'm not sure which I should be using here. My understanding is that the 6870 has more horsepower behind it, but the R7 is going to have better support for newer things, even if it's a mid-range card. Any advice?
 
That's a tough one, they are both neck and neck.

The 260x has 2gb of RAM right? I believe the 6870 only has 1gb

I would go with the 260x for lower heat and power usage
 
I would stick with the 260X. GCN and Mantle Support. I also thing the R7 doesn't take as much power.
 
Yep, the 270 has 2GB of RAM, and iirc they're both clocked similarly. I was bending toward the 270 for the power useage (as I'm running a pretty small power supply atm) and for future support of DX11/12 featuresets.
 
The 6870 is a slightly better gpu performace wise but really its such a small difference you wouldn't notice. The 260x could likely gain more performance as drivers get better and should have 2gb vram vs 1gb vram on the 6870. The 260x is also newer and uses less power and generates less heat.

You should sell the 6870 while the value is still pretty good, but keeping either card would be fine.
 
Yeah, I was looking at that while I was on here, the miners seem to have kept the value of the 6870s up higher than I'd have expected. I'll have to dig into selling it while it's hot. Thanks, guys!
