Which 6790 brand

Could someone elaborate on the claim that the aluminum shroud is just a sticker?

From this link:

I had one of those, just because of the acclaimed full aluminum cover.
After taking it out of the box i realised that it was only a sticker, and not a full aluminum cover. The sticker is about 1mm thick and can easily be identified as being only a sticker, because some glue was visible near the fan ;)

I ended up sending it back and getting an xfx-card, which has audibly coil squeal under load, and will be sent back too. I guess i am waiting for this rumored new revision.
 
hell I'll sell my Sapphire HD 6970 for 330 inc shipping in packaging when the 6990 comes out, its about a week old.

If the 6990 will run on my PSU then I'm considering buying one at launch.
I've never used CrossFire/SLi and I'm starting to feel adventurous. Being able to run all my games with all the bells and whistles at 60+ FPS seems enticing to me. ;)

Will have to wait and see.
 
Ended up getting the MSI. Good bundle and warranty and best price. $349 after MIR.
 
i'll just return my 6970 and wait for the 6990, i'm not pleased with my waste of $$

EDIT: not really a waste, but If I knew the 6950 was pretty much guaranteed to turn into a 6970 I wouldn't have bought the 6970

I returned my XFX 6970 for the same reason. Just sounded like something was rattling in it. I might order the MSI 6970 from Newegg. $350 after $20 rebate is a nice price compared to the XFX. Can't believe I'm actually thinking this but I might try the 6990 despite swearing off dual-GPU cards after 3 RMAs with a GTX 295.
 
Surely the HD6970s are still reference cards, so the brand wouldn't have anything to do with QC issues?
 
From what I've read most reference AMD's are made by Sapphire and are all the same. The different brands can flash the cards with their own BIOS so the card is properly ID'd by GPUZ and to tweak gpu speed, etc.

I can attest to this cause I just got an MSI 6950 on thursday and could have flashed it with almost any BIOS I wanted to get it to "near" 6970 specs. The Sapphire was recommended in the guide I read at techpowerup.com but I found one that was generically branded as "AMD Radeon."

Sapphire? Really? I was under the impression an outside company like Foxconn were making them :S

I'm pretty sure the XFX is not manufactured by sapphire based on feedback on other forums. You can use any bios because they are all adhering to the reference design, thats why its called reference...
