Where do you look for best prices on components?

I built a new computer a year ago by just jumping around to the main online shopping giants (like newegg, ncix, mwave, frys, etc etc), but really couldn't find a good place to compare prices. It took a lot of time to track each website and pricing for computer components I wanted. newegg is a good default, but I have found that when you are putting a whole system together you can save a couple hundred bucks by buying stuff from different websites.

I will be building two new computers in the next week or so, and wanted to know what would be a good place to search for bargains. I used to use pricewatch, but it seems like they have fallen off the cliff as far as price comparisons. techbargains seems to be fairly useful, but you have to get lucky because it doesn't really compare current prices if there isn't a super deal out there (and often they only show expired deals). I use slickdeals to see if there are any great prices, but again it's not really comparing prices - just shows you if something is selling for a great price. I have tried using pricegrabber, but often I run across places they don't list which have better prices.

Resellerratings still seems to be useful for checking on dealer ratings.

So my tech buddies, what do you use to shop for prices on specific computer components?

i keep any eye on slickdeals.net and fatwallet.com... always find the best deals there.

Thanks to all who posted. If anybody has any other sites for price searching, I would be interested.

Thanks, but they have gone downhill. I already posted in my thread why I didn't use them any more. :p

Forgot about fatwallet.com, never used them. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

A friend of mine seems to like http://bensbargains.net/ though I generally just watch http://slickdeals.net/. From your post it sounds like you want a site that will do a good job of listing the best prices on specific components. I can't really provide one, but I will say that it might help if you dig around in the slickdeal.net forums. Keep in mind that only the top rated deals make the front page, I've found some excellent stuff through the forums but because only a few people were interested it stayed in the forum.

I use Froogle sometimes. Just make sure to double check the vendors rep with reselleratings.

i've just about given up on buying my components from all different places.
Unless there is a significant price difference I buy everything from Newegg for the sole reason that it keeps track of all my purchases in a single place.

Among other things, it helps me keep track of what i've purchased, when I purchased it, how long of a warranty I have left, how much I paid, etc
It's worth the extra few dollars to know that if in 363 days my motherboard takes a shit I can just ask newegg for a replacement

i'll check out bensbargains.net - seems good, but their search feature really just redirects to nextag

I check dealnews.com daily and every blue moon techbargins.com.

dealnews.com is a new one for me, but their search just redirects to pricegrabber

I use Froogle sometimes. Just make sure to double check the vendors rep with reselleratings.

I forgot about Froogle, but I think that is the same as "shopping results" when searching on Google (?)

So really what I was looking for is a new replacement for pricewatch.com (with search capability). The best method seems to be:

1. look through the "deal" websites (slickdeals, froogle, dealnews, techbargains, bensbargains, fatwallet)
2. use generic search engines (nextag, pricegrabber, google)
3. before purchase, use resellerratings.com to check company ratings

While just defaulting to newegg for all purchases is ideal, I find that when ordering a number of items all at once (a new build), I can often save an average of 10% (which ends up being $100-150+) by shopping around.
