I have heard more and more lately that ATI will indeed have a fall refesh, code named the R480. But as for detail I am at a loss, is it much faster than the current X800XT ? And whats is the in store date ?

For a fact, I just heard today that ATI said it's R5xx series will be out 1st half 05, but the R480 would be the last of the X800 architecture ?

I would think ATI has learned a lesson, and wont offcially announce it, until there are plenty of them in stock for "real" ?

Considering that R420 XT models have barely started showing up in quantity, don't hold your breath. :p

The thing i dont understand is how they say there is short supply becuase theys upplied people like Dell, but you cant buy one from dell either?

1. according to the inq r480 already taped out and ATI has them up and running for testing purposes - so it might/should hit the shelves before christmas. as for *much* faster... i doubt it. i think ATI is more aiming at higher yields/availability with this one.

2. as for r500 everything should just bee taken as speculation IMHO, although in yet another story here it is said that r500 is practically ready and tapes out anytime soon. judgeing by the x800 tape-out to market timeframe we could see this thing as early as late Q1 2005, but i doubt it will be before Q2 at the earliest. depends on nVidias preassure through SLI and all, of course...
architecture-wise it will surely have some x800 (r300) based tech in it, but with the announced SM3 support etc i'd expect more of a complete redesign (by the ex-artX-team that designed r300, could be wrong though).

3. i sure do hope so :)

Disclaimer: The following post is full of wild-assed guesses

My best guess is that R480 will be a slightly tweaked R420 using the TSMC 110nm process. I doubt clockspeeds will be much quicker than R420 but I suppose with a double-slot cooling solution they may reach the 540-560MHz core clock range. ATi may have a few tricks up it's sleeves though, R480 is all they've got to compete against the menace of SLi for several months so it's got to be good!! Maybe ATi will shock us all and add some SLi-type technology to R480? Or they may wait until R520 for SLi to give them time to develop something special though. ETA......January, February '05?? At least the die shrink should mean there's more of them around to buy though!! :D

some more info - albeit very little - on r500 was recently published at bexond3D's here , too.

BULLSHIT. We all know this is NOT happening, so why even give the rumors legs? We won't be seeing new video cards from either company until summer.

hey king, maybe it is - he just asked for info on the parts and, as both r480 and of course r520 are unannounced, logically it is just rumors, as i stated above already. why are you so certain though we'll not be seeing new cards until summer? link? that seems highly unlikely IMHO, and both companies might well go for a minor update in order to get better yields...

i think it's unlikely we'll see new cards this year, tho...

Because of reality, man...come on...I mean, they haven't even done a paper release for these cards...they can't even get the x700 to come out for AGP yet...

Christmas is less than two months away...

There is just no way they are going to release, market and ship these cards, and have them actually SITTING on store shelves by Christmas...

Thats why I say summer AT THE EARLIEST...

pure speculation.

Well, if you want a paper launch - next week.

If you want a product in your hand - Somewhere after the year 2010. Just a ballpark figure. :p
