While it is easy to laugh at a big magazine like Business 2.0 when it fails to back up its data, the reality of the situation is that most people fail to regularly back up their own data. So, let this serve as a reminder to back up your system.

Business 2.0, the technology-aware magazine published by Time, periodically reminds readers of the importance of backing up computer files. A 2003 article likened backups to flossing - everyone knows it's important, but few devote enough thought or energy to it. Last week, Business 2.0 got caught forgetting to floss.

Hmm, that would suck. I am sure the admins are feeling the heat right now. Even if you backup daily, you still need to test those backups. Reminds me of a group I knew who backed up daily but didn't test for several months.

Yea, whenever I back up my system *including os* onto another harddrive, afterwards I always make sure that it works.

Ditto. Every so often, I recatalogue our backups to make sure the files are readable for restore. One of our old systems a few years ago had a habit of occasionally corrupting backups, and I never wanted to get caught flat-footed in an emergency.

Had a drive in a RAID-5 container on a server fail several days ago --and like several times before, neither the lights on the front of the system or the monitoring software saw it. I only found out when I had to reboot that server for another reason. While the rebuild was successful, it was hairy --I had a BSOD STOP error once during the process that I fortunately managed to fix without a complete rebuild of the system. I was very glad I had current backups just in case, though happier yet that I didn't have to use them.

The reasons of why most not so computer knowledgeable people don't back up their systems is:

1. They don't know how
2. To buy an another hard drive or an external drive is: $$$$ w/o it you can't buy it.
3. They are too lazy to backup.
