They are two WD 10,000 Raptors in SATA RAID 0 on a promise controller...slow isn't it? Any ideas?

Given the age of the 36GB raptors and sisoft's flaws, that's about what I'd expect. Just FYI the RAID kills your random xfers and that in turn nukes your overall score.

thats horrible access time. i was gonna get another raptor and RAID it but never mind

the part where it says SiSoftware Sandra Filesystem Benchmark :p

What's a good hard drive benchmark?

In ascending order, from worst to best:

1. SiSoft Sandra 200x

Strengths: None

Weaknesses: Inconsistencies between test runs; unrealistic results for its access time and transfer rates; no facilities for application-level testing.

use WinBench 99 ;)

Thanks guys,

I ran HDtach like 10 times and I get an average read time average of 74mb/sec

The random access time is 8.4

Seems like something might not be right, but I have no idea how to fix it.....the RAID drivers are the latest version and besides that, its not known to me how else to change anything.

Salo, I'm not sure which ATTO utility I need to benchmark.

Yeah i dont that thats right... I just ran in on my single raptor and got 8.7ms and 92.8mb/s

You try defragging? My scores were pretty low till I defragged with O&O complete/access.

That 92.8mb/s is way too big. Are you using Sandra? A quick google search for some reviews shows anywhere from 45 MB/s to 55 MB/s as the read speed. Are you talking about some different spec?

i got pwnt.

At least you recognized it, jk :) just dont smite me with your 2[H]4U might.

As to the problem it could just be the promise controller. Have you seen benchmarks with the same controller performing better? I remember I once switched between highpoint and promise and performance went down a lot (maybe vice versa it was a long time ago).

You should be getting around 95MB/s for average read in hdtach. Thats what ive seen with two raid 0 raptors. My own array on the intel ICH5R gets about 96MB/s average read and 150MB/s burst.

Woops...

Download the first one "ATTO Celerity and ExpressPCI Adapter Utilities"...install...then run the program that says, "Disk Benchmark"...

change transfer size to 0.5 to 1024.0...
change total length to 32

:)
