I've got my rig for about 5, 6 years now, slowly upgraded from its lowly config ov PII400 and Voodoo 3 3000 to a PIII 1GHz and a Radeon 9000 Pro. Current specs:

PIII 1GHz
1 gig SDRAM
Quantum Fireball 30gig\Maxtor DiamondmaxPlus 40gig
Yamaha 24x cd toaster\generica crap DVD\Cd drive
Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb
ATI TV Wonder
PCI Firewire and US2 card
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
PCI 3Com network card


Lately i've been thinking that i'm happy with this computer and I don't need another one. It does whatever I need it to do (office stuff, occassional low-end games like CS\Starcraft\Gunbound) and seems fine. I dont' have an urge for the fastest and latest. is there something wrong with me?
 
If it's all you need, then no, there's nothing wrong with you! :)

Different people just have different uses, and some people need more power than others. If 1ghZ is plenty for you, then awesome, that just means you spend less money than the rest of us that upgrade every 2 months :p

If you dont mind it, then theres nothing wrong with you at all. If you built a new rig, you will hella see the difference though.
 
Don't encourage him. He says he's happy, and that rig looks perfectly fine for what he's doing.

Upgrade or buy parts only when you need them. You're sane. I can't speak for the rest of us. ;)

Funny thing is that i've built many high-end computer systems for family, friends etc (3 GHz + P4's and AthlonXP's) and though i've used them, I'm like, OK so what? It was expensive, and it only runs programs that I don't use faster. Meh, I suppose its a good thing. thanks.

The amount of RAM makes a world of difference when having a pile of windows open at once. I use a 2.66 GHz P4 with 512MB DDR and a single hard drive at work, and the thing seems slow compared to the 1.25 GHz Athlon XP (underclocked (I'll pin-mod eventually... maybe...) 1700+ in a KT7 RAID) with 1GB SDR and multiple hard drives I use when I do development at home.
 
There's definitely something wrong with you. YOU'RE LONG OVERDUE FOR AN UPGRADE SON!!!

Nah I'm just messin with ya. Sometimes all it takes is a good driver to make a car fast.
 
If you're happy with it and it works for you, don't worry about upgrading. I recall at one point being in a similiar situation.

My rig was a p3cu 550@792 (then 700@880 --because a friend fried the 550 by accident and the 700 is what he replaced it with), with 768 megs of ram, using a GeForce 256 for primary video and a Voodoo3 for secondary + glide games, and a SB-Live value for sound. All hooked up to a good old performance 440BX mobo with a Slocket card.

The system just seemed to last and last. And last. I couldn't say exactly how long it stayed that way, but I do remember looking at my system rig one day and saying 'Boy, this thing hasn't changed in a while.'

When I finally upgraded, it wasn't even because the system wasn't performing as well as I needed it to. It was because my friend's system --which is continually built out of the leftover parts from upgrading my main system-- wasn't performing as well as we wanted it to for games. So I upgraded my main system in effect only so he could have the leftover parts as an upgrade for his computer :).

So anyways: If that's what you've got and it works for you, I would suggest you keep it. There's nothing wrong with that system, and to be honest it could run plenty of modern games just fine too. Hardware is a generation ahead of games right now, I think :).

This computer just lasts and lasts....i've put a zalman cooler in it and about 8 fans running at 5v so its silent, save for the buzzing hard drive (anyone else with maxtor hard drives have this problem?)

The gig of ram really helps when i'm doing video editing...premiere sure is a memory eater. quiet + good for my type of games = good computer for my room when studying ( I have untreated severe ADD lol) and a nice space heater when the room gets cold...hehe
 
Theres nothing wrong with you. But I bet you are going to have a new rig in the next 2 years because of the new games coming out.

No upgrade=no hassle, no cost, no risk, no downtime, etc. (Barring, of course, random failures, but problems are far more likely to be encountered when diddling around with ones hardware rather than just leaving it alone.)
 
If your happy with what you have (not much) then by all means keep it....hence my saying "if you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose". But, I do think that if you get a better computer, it'll open up a new world of possibilities for you.

Anyway, for $200 he could get an ATI 9800 pro. That would really give his system a sweet boost in performance. If he games every day, it'll be very nice ;)

If he's not a big gamer, then his rig is DEFINITELY plenty. I am a hardware junkie, but I also know it doesn't take 2 or 3ghz to do most daily stuff...

(but it sure does feel good LOL)

His system could only take advantage of the 9800 Pro if it was faster. A 9800 Pro would be wasted on a 1 Ghz P3.
 
it would be wasted. putting a 9800 pro in a system like that would be like putting a hemi in a honda......it'll work, its just it couldn't perform nearly as good if it was in a better system.

Speaking of upgrades, I have only upgraded on item because of "desire" thats my sound card. All the other upgrades are because the hardware died. Well thats a lie because my processor (current) was a un-needed upgrade. My mainboard died, and I could have kept my Duron 1.3, but I decided to get the 2400+ along with the mainboard.

the only reason I asked was because you said OC'd to 2.2Ghz. I figured you OC'd it yourself, and you were selling it. How can you gurantee that the 1800 will overclock to 2.2ghz?
 
Well we all know that no oc is guaranteed...

but "most likely to oc" is a different story :D

Edit - In my opinion this IS the best bang for the buck. Doesnt have the 512kb cache of the bartons but 256kb still rocks.
